Forensic psychiatrist Dr. Joseph Poitier currently practices with New Horizons Community Mental Health, their mission is to provide comprehensive behavioral health services to residents of Miami-Dade County regardless of race, creed, sex, age, gender orientation, disability, or socioeconomic status.
The Center has been successful in providing services to specialized populations. The latter includes persons experiencing homelessness and mental illness, co-occurring disorders (mental health and substance abuse), children and families at risk of abuse and neglect, adolescents at risk of involvement with the juvenile justice system, adult patients involved with state and local criminal justice systems, single mothers transitioning from public assistance to work and self-sufficiency, and residential care for patients unable to sustain independent living due to mental illness.
Additionally, he is affiliated with Jackson Behavioral Health Hospital Center, Jackson North Medical Center, and the North Shore Medical Center. He holds expertise in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, and forensic psychiatry.
In regards to his education, Dr. Poitier graduated from the University of Miami Leonard M Miller School of Medicine in 1980 and has been in practice for nearly four decades. He completed a residency at the University of Miami Health System and the Medical College Of Georgia Hospital. In 2018 he was awarded both the Compassionate Doctor Recognition and the Patients’ Choice Award.
