Get to know Neurologist Dr. Ahsan Moosa Naduvil Valappil, who serves patients in Cleveland, Ohio.

A board-certified neurologist, Dr. Valappil tends to children and adolescents at The Charles Shor Epilepsy Center of Cleveland Clinic. He is interested in the medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy, hemispheric epilepsy syndrome and hemispherectomy/ hemispherotomy, ketogenic diet therapy, genetic and metabolic causes of epilepsy, Rasmussen encephalitis, autoimmune epilepsy, video EEG monitoring, and invasive EEG monitoring.

Cleveland Clinic has one of the largest, most comprehensive programs in the world for the evaluation, medical, and surgical treatment of epilepsy in children and adults, managing more than 10,000 patients every year. The team of dedicated pediatric and adult neurologists; neurosurgeons; neuroradiologists; nuclear medicine physicians; nurse specialists; pharmacologists; physical, occupational and speech therapists; dietitians; neuropsychologists and psychiatrists; educational counselors and social workers; and an array of scientists and technologists all work together in a multidisciplinary approach to offer individualized epilepsy care to adults and children. They provide excellent clinical management and apply advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and approaches.

Upon completion of his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Thanjavur Medical College in India in 1994, Dr. Valappil performed his residency in pediatrics at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in 1997. He then completed his residency in neurology at Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology in 2000.

Upon relocating to the United States, he performed fellowships in child neurology and epilepsy at Cleveland Clinic in 2009 and 2010, respectively. This was followed by additional fellowships in child neurophysiology, EEG and epilepsy & pediatrics with the Cleveland Clinic in 2011 and 2013, respectively, and an additional residency in pediatrics with Cleveland CLinic in 2013. 

As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in general neurology, child neurology, and epilepsy by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

Neurology is a branch of medicine dealing with disorders of the nervous system. Neurologists are licensed medical specialists who diagnose and treat disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, nerves, and muscles of patients. They examine a patient’s mental and physical status, conduct medical tests and scans, and evaluate the results to diagnose and treat the patient.

On a more personal note, Dr. Valappil speaks multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Malayalam, and Tamil.
