  • How is a diabetic foot treated?

A diabetic foot needs to be evaluated for breaking down of the skin. A diabetic patient needs to see their medical doctor to keep the blood sugars under control as this maintains the bodies ability to fight infection. The skin is the first line of prevention against infection. We know that if there is poor circulation, a lack of feeling and a lot of pressure on the skin, you can potentially walk a hole in the skin allowing infection. Infections can increase blood sugars and elevated blood sugar over 200 leads to the bodies inability to fight infection. So depending on the examination patients need to be observed for evidence of skin breakdown prior to the breakdown, and preventative measures shoud be in place for the at risk patient. The risks have to be identified as well. READ MORE

  • How can I prevent corn in my feet from happening again?

Corns are pressure lesions on the toes caused by pressure on the skin from a bone pinching the skin from the shoe, another bone, or the floor. Larger, wider shoes will be the initial treatment unless the bone is pinching skin against the floor, in which case the toe needs to be lifted off the floor or straightened. If removing the tight or short shoe is unsuccessful, then straightening the toe or remodeling the bone surgically in most cases will relieve the problem unless the shoe is still too tight. • Why do my feet hurt when I wear flats or heels?

It could be a structural problem with your feet causing soft tissue tightness where it attaches to the heel from the leg to the heel and/or from the arch to the attachment on the heel. READ MORE

  • I have a painful, swollen ankle following an injury. What to do?

If you have had multiple ankle injuries and have noticed that with rest, ice, OTC NSAIDS, elevation and compression this incident is not like the others, it probably isn't. Further diagnostic testing such as an x-ray to rule out fracture or dislocation that may give information regarding ligament tear in conjunction to a doctor evaluating the anatomic structures to see where the pain and swelling corresponds to the anatomic structures to see if a pneumatic boot cast or even a weight bearing or non weight bearing below the knee cast is necessary. However If there is still pain with weight bearing a MRI may be necessary before you can put weight on the area to see if surgery is indicated prior to weight bearing as premature weight bearing may ensure the conservative care is unsuccessful and only surgery may provide he necessary alignment and function that you may want and need to regain full function.
