Dr. David J. Rau is a Bariatric Surgeon serving Houma and the surrounding communities at Bayou Surgical Specialists. 

Bayou Surgical Specialists has served their community for over forty years. Their surgeons also practice general surgery at Bayou Surgical Specialists, the largest surgery group in the tri-parish area. They utilize the most current and advanced techniques to perform surgeries of the breast, colon, gallbladder, thyroid, and bowel, colonoscopies, trauma, and cancer surgery.  A compassionate and efficient staff, with physicians skilled in advanced laparoscopic, minimally invasive surgical techniques, their goal is exceptional surgical care for every patient. 

Dr. Rau received his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in 1984. He went on to complete a residency at the Louisiana State University Hospital. As a general surgeon, Dr. Rau specializes in abdominal contents including the esophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and often thyroid glands. General surgeons are able to deal with almost any surgical or critical care emergency, also involving skin or soft tissue trauma. 

Dr. Rau is a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS). The ASBS advances the art and science of metabolic and bariatric surgery by continually improving the quality and safety of care and treatment of people with obesity and related diseases. 

Dr. Rau was named outstanding Resident of the year for four of the five years and served as chief administrative Resident in 1988.
