Graduating with his medical degree from the University of Bologna in Italy in 1973, he relocated to the United States where he completed his residency in internal medicine at the UMass Chan Medical School in 1975, and his residency in emergency medicine at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in 1979.

Emergency medicine, also known as accident and emergency medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention.
