Get to know Neonatologist / Perinatal Specialist Dr. Kristie Hornick, who serves patients in Toledo, Ohio.

Dr. Hornick is a neonatologist / perinatal specialist who is currently serving patients at ProMedica Toledo Hospital, located in Toledo, Ohio. The hospital is a part of the ProMedica Health System, which is a mission-based, not-for-profit integrated healthcare organization that serves communities in 28 states. The organization offers acute and ambulatory care, an insurance company with a dental plan, as well as post-acute and academic business lines. Dr. Hornick received her medical degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2000. Thereafter, she went on to complete her residency in pediatrics at Winthrop-University Hospital, followed by her fellowship training in neonatal-perinatal medicine at the St.Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Dr. Hornick is board-certified in neonatal-perinatal medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). Founded in 1933, the ABP is one of the 24 certifying boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS). It is an independent, nonprofit organization whose certificate is recognized throughout the world as a credential signifying a high level of physician competence.  

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty, and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. As a neonatologist, Dr. Hornick diagnoses and treats newborns with conditions such as breathing disorders, infections, and birth defects. She also coordinates care and medically manages newborns born premature, critically ill, or in need of surgery.

Perinatal medicine is a subspecialty of obstetrics concerned with care of the mother and fetus during pregnancy, labor, and delivery – particularly when the risk of complications is high. As a perinatal specialist, Dr. Hornick acts both as a consultant during lower-risk pregnancies and as the primary obstetrician in especially high-risk pregnancies.
