Get to know Pediatric Surgeon Dr. David C. Yu, who serves patients in New Orleans, Louisiana.

A renowned expert in the field of pediatric surgery, Dr. Yu has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of children’s healthcare. His holistic approach to pediatric surgery is characterized by a genuine concern for the well-being of his young patients and their families.

At Children’s Hospital New Orleans, he assumes the pivotal role of Service Line Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Trauma Medical Director. In this capacity, he is entrusted with overseeing the delivery of top-notch surgical care for the youngest and most vulnerable patients. Under his leadership, Children’s Hospital has achieved the significant milestone of being verified as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, a testament to the relentless efforts of Dr. Yu and his dedicated team.

Embarking on his medical journey, Dr. Yu earned his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine in 2004, before completing his residency training in general surgery at the same institution in 2011. With a relentless commitment to excellence, he then honed his skills by undertaking a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, where he had the opportunity to work with some of the most complex cases in the field.

As a testament to his success, the doctor is board-certified in pediatric surgery and general surgery by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.

Maintaining fellowship status, he is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP). He has also been recognized as an Associate Professor of Pediatric Surgery and Program Director for General Surgery Residency at Tulane University School of Medicine, where he shares his vast knowledge and experience with the next generation of medical professionals.

Pediatric surgery is a subspecialty of surgery involving the surgery of fetuses, infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Pediatric surgeons treat children from birth through late adolescence. They choose to make pediatric care the core of their medical practice.

Among his various accolades, Dr. Yu has been the recipient of the Top Doctor Award by Louisiana Life Magazine (2021, 2022), and New Orleans Magazine (2022, 2023).
