Early on, Dr. Susan’s desire to pursue the field of urology developed after observing a bladder stone extraction in medical school at the University of Baghdad College of Medicine. After graduating with his medical degree in 1970, he relocated to the United States. Once there, he completed his rotating internship at St. John Medical Center, followed by his residency at Hamot Medical Center. 

From there, he went on to serve multiple residencies at Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, and Saint Vincent Health Center. Finally, he completed his fellowship in kidney transplant at Cleveland Clinic and an additional fellowship within the Research Urological Institute at Cleveland Clinic in 2001.

Urology, also known as genitourinary surgery, is the branch of medicine that focuses on surgical and medical diseases of the male and female urinary-tract system and the male reproductive organs. Urologists specialize in diseases of the urinary tract and the male reproductive system. Patients may be referred to a urologist if their physician suspects they may need treatment for a condition relating to the bladder, prostate, urethra, ureters, kidneys, and adrenal glands. 

Among his many accolades, Dr. Susan has forty-two medical innovations and nine non-medical innovations. His commitment to the field of urology has resulted in five innovation awards from Cleveland Clinic in 2016 alone. He attributes his success to the Cleveland Clinic System of Healthcare and the support from his wife and two sons. 

In his free time, he enjoys gardening, exercising, and listening to music. He is fluent in Arabic and English.
