Dr. Vanbenthuysen is a prominent cardiologist who has been with South Denver Cardiology Associates, P.C. since 1987 and currently serves as its President.

The physicians of South Denver Cardiology Associates, P.C. are pioneers in cardiovascular medicine and Denver’s top heart doctors. The practice was found in 1973 and is committed to the highest quality guest care, offering a full range of diagnostic, interventional, preventive, and rehabilitation treatment programs through the South Denver Heart Center and affiliated hospital partners.

In addition to his Managing Director position with South Denver Cardiology Associates, P.C Dr. Vanbenthuysen serves as the Medical Staff President at Littleton Adventist Hospital, the Medical Co-Director of Centura Health’s Heart and Vascular System of Care, and sits on the National Catholic Health Initiative’s Cardiovascular Service Line Leadership Council. 

Passionate about his profession, he is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, and cardiovascular CT by the American Board of Internal Medicine, which is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world. 

Growing up in Des Moines, Iowa, Dr. Vanbenthuysen moved to New York in his teenage years. He attended Yale University, where he was recognized as a Yale National Scholar, and then went on to earn his medical degree from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1976. Following two years in residency training at Duke, he was awarded a National Research Service Award that brought him to Colorado, where he served a three-year research fellowship at the University of Colorado’ s Cardiovascular-Pulmonary Lab. 

The doctor’s clinical training resumed at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he completed his residency in internal medicine and his fellowship in cardiology and served for three years on the Faculty at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. 

In addition to having authored 19 peer-reviewed scientific articles, Dr. Vanbenthuysen has been recognized in the “Guide to Top Doctors”, “5280’s Top Docs” and “Best Doctors in America”.

Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the disorders of the heart, as well as the circulatory system. The field includes medical diagnosis and treatment of congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, heart failure, valvular heart disease, and electrophysiology. Cardiologists are doctors who diagnose, assess, and treat patients with diseases and defects of the heart and blood vessels (the cardiovascular system).

Happily married, Dr. Vanbenthuysen and his wife are the proud parents of five children and the grandparents of two grandchildren.
