Get to know Psychiatrist Dr. Howard L. Schwartz, who serves patients in Maplewood, New Jersey.

An experienced psychiatrist, Dr. Schwartz works with patients at his private practice in Maplewood, New Jersey. He works best with motivated adults, couples and teens open to introspection who seek to understand the complexity of their problems. He prescribes medication as needed in conjunction with dynamic psychotherapy.

“I apply psychoanalytic approaches flexibly to encourage individuals to identify their conflicts and vulnerabilities gradually as they are prepared to do so. My technique has been influenced and enriched by teaching and supervising other professionals, forty years of clinical practice with a wide range of patients, and my own life experiences” expressed the doctor.

Back in 1963, Dr. Schwartz graduated with his medical degree from the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. He completed his internship and residency in psychiatry at Montefiore Medical Center / Albert Einstein College of Medicine in 1967. Finally, he completed additional training in Psychoanalysis at the Downstate Psychoanalytic Institute in 1975.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.
