Get to know Family Physician Dr. Jeffrey R. Unger, who serves patients in the State of California.
Dr. Unger is a 3rd generation physician whose interest in medicine began at the impressionable age of 5 in Chicago while following his grandfather and father on house calls. He directs the Unger Primary Care Concierge Medical Group in Rancho Cucamonga, California. His practice is devoted to the comprehensive care of patients with diabetes, addiction, high cholesterol, chronic pain, mental illness, migraines, and other chronic disease states.
Additionally, he serves as the Director of Metabolic Studies at the Catalina Research Institute in Chino, California. The research center uniquely incorporates primary care with clinical research in areas related to diabetes, sexual dysfunction, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, pain, obesity, and mental illness. In 2017, Dr. Unger was appointed as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at the University of California Riverside School of Medicine.
His interest in diabetes began in 1986 when he was personally diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Remarkably, he was unable to find a local physician with enough experience in managing this condition to place him on insulin. Having learned close to nothing about diabetes during his medical education at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago and his three-year residency in family medicine at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield, he had no choice but to learn diabetes self-management by trial and error.
The dreadful sight of needles was quickly replaced by successful strategies he used to help others attain their glucose targets. Soon after, Dr. Unger began to teach his newly developed skills to other primary care physicians both locally and at national meetings. He then partnered with pharmaceutical companies requesting to become an Advisor for new drugs such as inhaled insulin, GLP-1 analogues, rapid acting insulin analogues, SGLT-2 inhibitors, and DPP-4 inhibitors.
To date, the doctor remains a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Family Practice, the California Academy of Family Physicians, the American Headache Society, the American Council for Headache Education, the National Headache Foundation, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists, the Primary Care Headache Network, the Primary Care Metabolic Group, the Primary Care Education Consortium, the Headache Cooperative of the Pacific, and the American Academy of Private Physicians. He is also a Fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (FACE) and in 2009, he was honored as the “Father of the Year” by the American Diabetes Association.
Furthermore, he is board-certified in family medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM) - a non-profit, independent medical association of American physicians who practice in family medicine and its sub-specialties.
Throughout his fruitful career, Dr. Unger has published over 190 peer-reviewed articles on diabetes, migraine, and pain management. Moreover, he has written 3 medical textbooks on diabetes, has been the primary investigator in over 40 clinical research studies, as well as has served as a consulting physician for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball club and the World Wrestling Federation. At present, he serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of Family Practice and Diabetes Care.
