Originally from Guayaquil, Ecuador, Dr. Zambrano graduated with his medical degree from the Universidad Catolica Santiago de Guayaquil in 1991. During his last year of medical school, he performed clinical rotations at the Jackson Memorial Hospital of the University of Miami, as part of the Latin American Training Program. His internship and residency in pediatrics were performed at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center from 1994 to 1997. His fellowship in allergy and immunology was completed at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville in 1999.
The doctor’s interest in the field of Allergy & Immunology started very early in his medical studies. This was influenced by his “highly allergic family.” It was after spending a summer vacation, shadowing his family’s allergist that he finally fell in love with the specialty.
During his clinical rotations at the University of Miami, Dr. Zambrano had the opportunity to work in the Pediatric Immunology Division with Dr. Gwendolyn Scott. This work led to his doctoral thesis about selenium deficiency and cardiomyopathy in children infected with HIV. During his fellowship he worked under the directions of Dr. Thomas Platts-Mills and Dr. Peter Heymann. His research focused on the effect of the rhinovirus infections in asthma.
With an unwavering commitment to his specialty, he is board-certified in allergy and immunology by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI). The mission of the ABAI is to improve the quality of medical care by the development and utilization of professional and educational standards for the initial certification and maintenance of certification of physician specialists in allergy and immunology.
Moreover, Dr. Zambrano is board-certified in pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP). The mission of the ABP is to advance child health by certifying pediatricians who meet standards of excellence and are committed to continuous learning and improvement.
Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, and Fellow of the American College of Asthma, Allergy and Immunology, he is an active member of the Texas Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Society, and the Greater Houston Asthma, Allergy and Immunology Society (Past President).
Allergy and immunology involve the management of disorders related to the immune system. These conditions range from the very common to the very rare, spanning all ages and encompassing various organ systems. An allergist / immunologist is a physician specially trained to diagnose, treat, and manage allergies, asthma, and immunologic disorders, including primary immunodeficiency disorders.
Happily married, his wife, Grace, is a pediatrician in private practice. Together, they have two children, Isabella, and Juanpablo. Besides the passion for allergy, his interests are diverse, but he loves photography the most. He loves to take every opportunity to capture images of birds, nature, and people.
