What to avoid with type 1 diabetes?
The fewer carbohydrates she eats, the less insulin she will need, so starches (bread, potatoes, pasta, rice, and others) and sugars (candy, sweets, cakes, and even some fruits) should be minimized. A dietitian who specializes in Type 1 and children's diets should be consulted. But perhaps more important is the AVOIDANCE OF HYPOGLYCEMIA (low blood sugar). This happens if too much insulin is used. You should become an expert in diagnosing and treating this problem. READ MORE
Can a 9 year old kid get the second covid 19 dose if she is currently having a stomachache?
No...please put it off until she is well. READ MORE
Why does my child's mouth hurt?
It could be any number of causes. Where is it? A specific point on the tongue, gums, teeth, soft palate, inside of cheeks, corner of lips/mouth? Are there any areas of deeper redness on the gums or actual lesions? Whitish areas inside the mouth could be thrush, a yeast infection. Without more specifics, hard to say. He should be seen. How can I increase my toddler's appetite?
There is no reason to do that. Many mothers complain about the lack of appetite in toddlers since their growth slows down and they do not eat as much as they did in the first 15 or so months of their lives. You cannot control how MUCH a child eats--only WHAT they eat. So, if you serve them chicken and mashed potatoes and string beans, and they refuse to eat it and you, then give them a hot dog, you are teaching them how to get the food they want. Just relax about how much they eat, just make sure it is good food offered to them. READ MORE
Penis head won’t come out of foreskin?
This should be checked by your pediatrician. If it is indeed true phimosis, a consult with a urologist would be appropriate. READ MORE
How can I treat my 2 year olds bronchitis at home?
The first question to ask is: Should he be seen, or can I take care of this at home? If s/he is eating well, little to no fever, playing about as much as usual and, most important, has no respiratory distress (trouble breathing/wheezing), then make sure s/he gets enough fluids and use a vaporizer in their room at night. If you have any questions about his condition, at least make a telemedicine appointment with a healthcare provider. READ MORE
Is a flem cough a symptom of covid-19 in children?
No. It is usually a dry cough, and 6-year-olds almost never show symptoms of covid-19. READ MORE
What temp should I take my child to hospital?
Fevers alone are never a reason to take a child to the hospital. Increased body temperatures are a defense mechanism against invading viruses or bacteria. It all depends upon the symptoms, and the hospital should not be your first thought. They are not good places to be unless you absolutely have to go there. Your pediatrician should be your first thought, and urgent care second. A phone call is all you may need. READ MORE
What is the most common cause of abdominal pain in children?
Acute onset abdominal pain is usually viral gastroenteritis ("stomach flu"), but longer-term abdominal pain can be any number of things. What I would do is an elimination diet -- take away dairy first (lactose intolerance) and if after 10 days no change, eliminate gluten. READ MORE
What home remedy is good for a child's fever?
Lukewarm sponge bath. But if he starts shivering, dry him off and put a light robe or PJs on him. READ MORE
How do I check my child for head lice?
There are two things we look for when examining for head lice: 1) the lice themselves. They are about the size of a sesame seed. Wear thin rubber gloves and carefully push the hairs apart one area at a time and see if any are crawling. 2) The "nits" or eggs. These are small spherical white things attached to the hair close to the base. Dandruff or dead skin will shake off easily, but the nits are stuck. READ MORE
What are the effects of giving babies bottled milk?
Not only do babies who are fed cow's milk formula thrive, but those on a soy milk formula do as well! Don't be bullied into feeling guilty about not wanting to nurse -- do what you are comfortable with. One thing you CAN do to make bottle feeding more like breastfeeding is, when practical, remove your top so the baby feels the warmth of your skin as s/he feeds. READ MORE
Why is my teenager so aggressive with me?
It could be any number of things, but drug use must be considered. READ MORE
What are the early signs of autism spectrum disorder?
It may be part of the autistic spectrum...but other conditions can also cause these types of behaviors. I would recommend testing by a qualified psychologist trained for the testing of children. Your pediatrician or family practitioner can certainly point you in the right direction. READ MORE
How are throat infections contracted?
Strep throat spreads by direct touching between kids/adults or even from surfaces touched by those either carrying the strep bacteria or infected. Strep is not as contagious as viral infections, and there are individual aspects to personal immunity that makes some people more or less susceptible. Repeated strep infections need to be dealt with a bit differently. Barnett Mennen, MD READ MORE
