Get to know Hematologist-Oncologist Dr. Gregory J. Shypula, who serves patients in Avenel, New Jersey.

A skilled hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Shypula sees patients at his private practice – Gregory J. Shypula, M.D., P.A. – located in Avenel, New Jersey. He has over two decades of experience offering exceptional care and treatment for patients with cancers and blood disorders. 

Having established his private practice in 1992, Dr. Shypula and his staff are committed to providing state-of-the-art medical care in a community setting. They provide comprehensive screening, diagnosis, and treatment of various blood disorders and cancers in a compassionate and supportive environment.

Among his other titles, Dr. Shypula is the Director of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Raritan Bay Medical Center; a position he has held since 1996. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School (UMDNJ); an attending physician at Raritan Bay Medical Center, John F. Kennedy Medical Center, Rahway Hospital, and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital; and remains affiliated with The Cancer Institute of New Jersey. 

With a broad educational background, Dr. Shypula graduated with his medical degree from Wroclaw Medical University in Poland in 1981. He then relocated to the United States, performing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. He then went on to complete his fellowship in the Division of Hematology and Oncology at St. Luke’s /Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. 

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in hematology, medical oncology, and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

On a professional level, Dr. Shypula is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of cancer, malignant blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, and blood disorders such as iron-deficiency anemia, clotting abnormalities, hemophilia, and sickle-cell disease.

Throughout his line of work, Dr. Shypula has authored several articles that have been published in scientific, peer-reviewed journals.
