The doctor’s acclaimed career in medicine began in 1991 after he earned his medical degree from the West Virginia University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He also completed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at the same educational venue, where he served as chief resident during his final year of residency and was one of a small group of physicians who received one year of advanced additional training, over and above all other residents. 

He is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The mission of the ABO is to serve the public by improving the quality of ophthalmic practice through a process of certification and Maintenance of Certification that fosters excellence and encourages continual learning.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye.
