Get to know Neonatologist Dr. Josephine M. Vergara, who serves patients in Maryland.

Being a fellowship-trained neonatologist, Dr. Vergara is trained to handle the special health needs of newborns. She is affiliated with MedStar Harbor Hospital & MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

MedStar Harbor Hospital is a private nonprofit, 179-bed, acute care teaching hospital in Baltimore City, Maryland. It offers the services of a large, regional medical center in a smaller, more personal environment. From general medicine and surgery, obstetrics, orthopedics and geriatrics to cardiology, gastroenterology and urology, the team of caring physicians and associates serves the unique needs of every patient. The hospital’s continuum of care, for patients from infancy through the senior years, also includes wellness programs, outpatient services, and inpatient treatment.

From its inception in 1977, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center has been guided by a vision to be a regional medical center for specialty medical and surgical care for the 800,000 people who reside in Southern Maryland. Today, it is a full-service, 250-bed acute and sub-acute care regional medical center in Clinton with more than 50,000 emergency room visits and 20,000 admissions each year. The hospital treats illnesses and injuries & promotes wellness and community health.

Back in 1969, Dr. Vergara graduated with her medical degree from Far Eastern University – Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation in the Philippines. Upon relocating to the United States, she completed her residency in pediatrics at Maimonides Medical Center, followed by her fellowship in neonatal-perinatal medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

With over five decades of experience in her field, her areas of interest include pediatrics, internal medicine/pediatrics, neonatal-perinatal medicine, and obstetrics & gynecology.

Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill, or premature newborns. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units. A neonatologist is a medical professional who specialises in caring for newborn babies, particularly those who are ill or born prematurely. They may also provide antenatal consultation for women with certain risk factors, such as multiple births.
