Dr. Shienbaum began his educational journey at Albright College where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. He continued his studies at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he received a medical degree. He then completed a residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology (AP/CP) at Temple University and finished a fellowship in Cytopathology at Hahnemann University Hospital. 

 

With more than 25 years of experience in pathology, Dr. Shienbaum is considered one of the best pathologists in the region and is an expert in cancer diagnostics, laboratory management, surgical pathology, and cytopathology. He has further expertise in gastrointestinal and genitourinary pathology. As testament to his success, Dr. Shienbaum has been awarded Top Doctor in Pennsylvania numerous times. 

 

Dr. Shienbaum is the President and CEO of Pathology Associates and its sister company Keystone Medical Laboratories. Pathology Associates was established in 1958 and is the premier and most venerable pathology practice in northeastern Pennsylvania. Pathology Associates and Keystone Medical Laboratories serves eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey and provides services to local hospitals, laboratories, physician offices, and surgical centers. The practice now employs four board-certified pathologists who possess subspecialty expertise in gastrointestinal pathology, genitourinary pathology, breast and gynecologic pathology, and cytopathology. In addition, they educate and mentor future physicians at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine. 

 

Dr. Shienbaum joined Pathology Associates and Keystone Medical Laboratories in 2018 and soon thereafter became the group’s president and managing parter. Under his stewardship, the lab has transformed from a struggling business into one which is thriving and growing. He has done this by surrounding himself with a great team of people who share his values of honesty, transparency, kindness, and an unyielding commitment to clinical excellence.

Dr. Alan J. Shienbaum is a board-certified pathologist who is in private practice at Pathology Associates of Northeastern Pennsylvania and Keystone Medical Laboratories. Keystone Medical Laboratories was opened in 2008 and is a sister company of Pathology Associates. 

Additionally, Dr. Shienbaum is on the medical staff at Commonwealth Health Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Moses Taylor Hospital is a 214-bed, acute care hospital with more than 400 physicians on staff and a commitment to providing quality health care that is patient- and community-focused. As the only hospital in Lackawanna County to offer labor and delivery, Moses Taylor is known for its pediatric and neonatal care and was the first hospital in the nation to earn Perinatal Care Certification by The Joint Commission.

In 1994, Dr. Shienbaum earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He then went on to complete his residency in Anatomic Pathology and Clinical Pathology at Temple University Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Cytopathology at MCP/Hahnemann University Hospital. 

Dr. Shienbaum holds the position of President of the American Osteopathic College of Pathologists, the premier membership organization for osteopathic physicians specializing in the field of pathology. He also holds board certification in Anatomic Pathology, Clinical Pathology, and Cytopathology by the American Board of Pathology.

Pathologists are physicians who specialize in the diagnosis and management of diseases by laboratory methods. Dr. Shienbaum’s clinical expertise encompasses oncologic surgical pathology, fine needle aspiration cytopathology, gastrointestinal pathology, breast pathology, gynecologic pathology, head and neck pathology, pulmonary pathology, and medical directorship of clinical laboratories.
