Zev Cohen, MD, a highly respected family medicine physician with more than three decades of experience, offers a new approach to care at his concierge medicine practice. The appeal of the concierge medicine model is inspired by patients seeking an enduring, meaningful connection with their physician.
“As we have seen clearly and compellingly during the COVID-19 crisis, providing patients with prompt, focused attention and individualized care is more important than ever,” says Dr. Cohen, “but it is virtually impossible to deliver this level of care in a traditional practice.”
At his concierge or membership medicine practice, Dr. Cohen cares for significantly fewer patients, making a profound difference at every point of care. Same-day appointments for acute illness are readily available, either in-office or via telemedicine. Visits are extended and unhurried, with time to manage complex issues and chronic conditions as well as focus on an individualized plan for proactive wellness. If hospitalization is needed, Dr. Cohen serves as his patient’s dedicated advocate with attending physicians and specialists.
Most notably, patients can reach Dr. Cohen after hours directly on his cell phone for immediate guidance and advice. This valued benefit of a concierge practice provides peace of mind and significantly reduces the need to visit an emergency room or urgent care facility.
“For patients, it is tremendously comforting to know they can connect easily and often with me,” says Dr. Cohen. “Just as important is that I now have the time to reach out frequently and see how each one of my patients is faring, not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.”
Susan A, a patient for seven years, says Dr. Cohen’s care has always been exceptional, exemplified by a call she received at the beginning of the pandemic. “He was just checking in to see how I was feeling, how I was coping,” she recalls. “We talked about non-medical things too, like what I was reading. I have always had the highest regard for him in every way – his diagnostic skills, caring personality – but that phone call is something I will never forget.”
For Congers residents Robert and Ivy H, long-time patients of Dr. Cohen, the decision to join his concierge practice was immediate. “It didn’t take us more than two minutes to know we were going to sign up,” says Ivy. “Dr. Cohen is an extraordinary doctor and person. He’s so different from others, always taking the time to answer your questions, never ever rushing you out the door. It’s why his waiting room was always so crowded before he changed to the concierge model.”
During the height of the COVID-19 crisis in the Nanuet area, the couple was especially grateful for the personal attention Dr. Cohen provided.
“We had decided to go in for our routine blood work, but were nervous about being around other people at that point,” reveals Ivy. “Dr. Cohen cleared the office for us and arranged everything perfectly so we could walk right in with no fear.”
In a post-COVID environment, Dr. Cohen plans to make the empty waiting room a permanent feature of his practice to ensure patients have minimal contact with others. A virtual telemedicine appointment will also remain an option for patients who may prefer to remain safely at home.
“It turns out that patients really love telemedicine,” he says, “for its ease of use and the very real connection we can make as they sit comfortably in their living room. Even when we return to more normal times, I’ll continue to offer telemedicine as a way to provide excellent care to any patient who requests it.”
Dr. Cohen says he is now able to practice medicine the way he always envisioned as a former head of emergency medicine: “I’ve long sought the opportunity to have time to really know my patients and turn the focus from illness to prevention. Now, I can help patients avoid heart attacks, strokes and many other conditions with proactive, preventive medicine and prompt, thoughtful, personalized attention.”
Says Terry Bauer, CEO of Specialdocs, the concierge medicine experts who assisted Dr. Cohen with his transition: “We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Cohen to our network of outstanding concierge physicians. The benefits of a long-term personal relationship with a primary care doctor that define our concierge practice model are more urgent than ever in our world today.”
