Get to know Ophthalmologist Dr. Victor H. Gonzalez, who serves patients throughout the State of Texas.

A distinguished figure in the field of ophthalmology, Dr. Gonzalez established the Gulf Coast Eye Institute in 2007, which has become a leading eye care institution serving the Rio Grande Valley region in Texas.

His practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of various ophthalmologic diseases, with a particular emphasis on the vitreous body of the retina. His expertise in this subspecialty includes the management of conditions like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy, which are of paramount importance in preserving and restoring vision.

Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Gonzalez received his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School. He then pursued his residency at the Doheny Eye Institute at Los Angeles County Hospital in Los Angeles, California. Finally, he honed his skills and expertise by completing a demanding vitreoretinal fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, once again affiliated with Harvard Medical School.

An expert in his field, the doctor is board-certified in ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). The ABO is an independent, non-profit organization responsible for certifying ophthalmologists in the United States of America.

On a professional level, he is an active member of prestigious professional organizations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. 

As a dedicated researcher, Dr. Gonzalez actively participates in projects aimed at preventing blindness and improving eye care. One of his most remarkable contributions is his work with underserved populations, particularly in Mexico. He has collaborated closely with Mexican public officials to enhance the quality of eye care for those who are most in need. 

Beyond his professional endeavors, he is deeply rooted in his local community in the Rio Grande Valley. He is a strong advocate for education and is actively involved with local independent school districts, technical schools, and universities. As a faculty member at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, he is dedicated to the training of future retina specialists. He has established a comprehensive retinal fellowship program that has successfully trained nine retina fellows from Latin American countries, empowering them to provide critical eye care services in their home countries.

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine and surgery, which deals with the diagnosis and treatment of eye disorders. Ophthalmologists are experts in the diseases, functions, and anatomy of the eye. They may provide routine care such as vision testing, as well as prescribe and fit eyeglasses or contact lenses. However, ophthalmologists are also surgeons.
