  • Is depression a serious condition?

People use depression in different ways usually to describe feeling sad about a particular situation or event. However, when one is seen by a Certified Mental Health Provider and given a formal diagnosis of “clinical depression,” this then suggests a serious illness that one must not take lightly. Untreated depression at its worst can be fatal or can lead to loss of functioning in ones everyday life. My advice is to seek treatment and continue with treatment if a formal diagnosis has been made. Treatment can be in the form of psychotherapy, medications or a combination of both. • What medication is given to kids for anxiety?

A Board Certified Child Psychiatrist can evaluate him and put him on appropriate medication or medications if indicated. It is never a good idea to get medication suggestions online. If he has already been prescribed a medication by someone and you have questions or concerns about that particular medicine, then that can be addressed as it’s own issue. Regards. • Is puberty the reason my son is acting out?

What I usually tell my patients is that yes teenagers can be moody, but was there is a decline in functioning, that is is worth taking your son or daughter to get assessed. Depression is not uncommon in teenagers so this should be an immediate concern. Depressed teenagers tend to isolate, grades may fall, might be more irritable. It is worth taken your son to a mental health professional to get him assessed for a major depressive episode or other mood disorders - which if diagnosed should then be treated and not simply discarded as one just being a teenager. I hope this helps. Ifeoma Arene, M.D. READ MORE

  • My daughter still continues to be hyperactive. What should I do?

Have her see a Board Certified Child Psychiatrist who can correctly diagnose and treat her. It is possible she is not on the right medication or dose. ADHD for many is a lifelong condition. Adequate and precise treatment is imperative and the physician best suited to do so is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist. Regards, Ifeoma Arene, M.D. READ MORE
