Graduating summa cum laude with his Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology from Rice University in 1973, Dr. Shandera earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1977. He did postgraduate training in internal medicine at the Stanford University teaching hospitals, and in infectious diseases at the Massachusetts General Hospital, a principal Harvard University teaching affiliate.
In pursuit of clinical excellence, the doctor is board-certified in infectious disease and internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
Throughout his illustrious career, he served as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer with the Centers for Disease Control and in 1981 submitted with Los Angeles colleagues the first report of a syndrome now referred to as AIDS. He currently attends the medicine service at Ben Taub General Hospital, and teaches courses at Baylor College of Medicine on Human Rights and Medicine and the impact of our entry into the Nuclear Era on Medicine.
Managing about 250 indigent HIV-infected patients, Dr. Shandera has published over 30 peer-reviewed publications and lectured and presented data in over 25 nations. He is an active board member with the Sociedad San Martin de Porres, a mission group to the indigent in Guatemala with assistance to projects and clinics in three areas of the country.
Infectious disease is a medical specialty dealing with the prevention, the diagnosis, and the treatment of all infections. An infectious disease specialist’s practice also consists of managing nosocomial (hospital-acquired) infections.
On a more personal note, he serves as a volunteer pipe organist at the Chapel of St Basil with the University of St Thomas.
