Dr. Frank Mazzola is a Cardiac Electrophysiologist (Heart Rhythm Specialist) practicing in the Rio Grande Valley. In 1995, he founded the first Cardiac Electrophysiology Program in the Valley, offering treatments and procedures that patients either had no access to or had to travel to other parts of Texas to receive them. He received his undergraduate from the Hartt School of Music, with a major in piano performance and a minor in earth science. Following this he attended the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and graduated in 1987. He then went on to his internal medicine residency at NYU Medical Center. After an additional year as chief medical resident, he stayed at NYU and completed his cardiology fellowship. From there he did 2 years of cardiac electrophysiology fellowship at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center and the University of California in San Diego. He then came down to the Rio Grande Valley in 1995.
Dr. Mazzola has published in various peer-reviewed journals such as Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Circulation, and PACE, and served as commentator and contributing author for Cardiology Review. He has given numerous lectures to peers, physicians in training, hospital staff, and the general public. He currently serves on the faculty of an International Fellows Program which provides high-level education to cardiologists and electrophysiologists in training all over the world.
Dr. Mazzola's primary practice is in Harlingen at the South Heart Clinic, where he is Director of the Arrhythmia Center. He oversees the Device Clinic, where patients' implanted cardiac devices such as pacemakers, defibrillators, and loop recorders are checked, the home monitoring program where devices can be tested remotely, and the Mobile Cardiac Telemetry service, where arrhythmias can be diagnosed with cardiac monitors. On the hospital side, he is the founder and director of the Cardiac Electrophysiology Program at Harlingen Medical Center.
Dr. Mazzola practices all aspects of Electrophysiology, including electrophysiologic studies, catheter ablation including complex ablations for atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, management of complex device issues, laser lead extraction, advanced management of dysautonomic syncope (fainting), and clinical arrhythmia management. Dr. Mazzola and his team use a comprehensive patient-centered approach, focusing on the whole person rather than just the arrhythmia issue.
In his time away from work, Dr. Mazzola enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, and pursuing his passion for piano.
