Get to know Emergency Physician Dr. Timothy A. Coakley, who serves patients in Norfolk, Virginia.

A committed emergency physician, Dr. Coakley is the CEO of Tactical Emergency Consultants International, Inc., providing consulting services for several companies, both foreign & domestic, developing innovative technologies in emergency medicine. He also provides clinical emergency services as a Locum Tenens for several facilities, including Marion General Hospital, Indiana University Health System Hospitals, and Presbyterian Hospital New Mexico.

In regards to his educational background, he graduated from Naval Hospital Corpsman School in 1982. He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Northern Illinois University in 1990, and earned his medical degree from the Finch University of Health Sciences, Chicago Medical School in 1995. He then went on to complete his internship at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton in 1996, and completed his training in undersea and hyperbaric medicine at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute in 1997. Finally, he completed his residency in emergency medicine at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in 2002.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Medicine (FAAEM) and Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP), the doctor is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM). The ABEM is one of 24 medical specialty certification boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

Moreover, Dr. Coakley is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), Perinatal Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Basic Life Support (BLS). He is also an active member of the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine.

Among his other roles, he serves as a Consultant to The Technical Cooperation Program (TTCP); Under Secretary of Defense (Acquisition, Logistics, & Technology); Office of Naval Research; Naval Research Lab; Department of Defense Technical Support Working Group (TSWG); Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency; and US Marine Corps Systems Command. 

As for his academic appointments, Dr. Coakley is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine.

In the past, he served as a Corporate Officer at International Tactical Medical Solutions, Inc. (2011-2015); System Medical Director for the Bon Secours Hospital System (2011-2012); Associate Professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (2011-2012); Department Chairman of Emergency Medicine at Lewis-Gale Hospital (2011-2012); Men’s Wellness Centers (August 2020-December 2020); and was a Locum Tenens physician at Southeast Health Medical Center (2019-2020), Marian General Hospital (February 2020), Russel Medical (2018-2020), Centra Lynchburg General Hospital (2018-2019). Southeast Health Medical Center (2017-2018), Health East Woodwinds Health Campus (2016-2017), Southeastern Alabama Medical Center (2016), UPMC Altoona (2014-2016), Great River Medical Center (2015-2016), Mercy Medical Center (2010-2011), and St. Mary’s Medical Center (2006-2007).

Emergency medicine, also known as accident and emergency medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. An emergency physician works in an emergency department to care for acutely ill or injured patients on an unscheduled basis.

Among his various accolades, Dr. Coakley was inducted into the Leading Physicians of the World in Emergency Medicine (2016), knighted into the Order of St. Constantine for Military Medical Service (2016), honoree for research in traumatic brain injury at the 2009 Country United Gala, and Outstanding Family Medicine Clerk and Outstanding Class Service Award (1995).
