Dr. Matalon’s expertise includes dialysis. He favors home dialysis, and trains patients to be dialyzed in the comfort of their own homes. Besides the convenience , it has been shown that patients undergoing dialysis in their home remain healthier and live longer than patients undergoing treatment in dialysis centers. He of course has a very large number of patients who chose treatment in dialysis centers. He also has an extremely high record in getting patients kidney transplants when their kidneys have failed. Transplantation remains the best treatment for patients whose kidneys have failed. 

A large part of Dr. Matalon’s  practice includes consultation and management of patients who have chronic kidney disease and are approaching the need for dialysis and transplantation. . Playing an integral role in shaping the next generation of medical professionals, Dr. Matalon holds the esteemed position of Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Back in the early days of his academic career, Dr. Matalon earned his Medical Degree from NYU Grossman School of Medicine in 1964. This foundational step was followed by a residency in internal medicine at NYU Medical Center in 1967, equipping him with crucial medical expertise. Subsequently, in 1969, he embarked on a fellowship in nephrology at the Veterans Administration Health System in New York. 

Building on this comprehensive training, Dr. Matalon achieved board certifications, firstly in internal medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1970, and subsequently in nephrology from the same board in 1974. 

Nephrology is a specialty of medicine and pediatrics that concerns itself with the kidneys. It is the study of normal kidney function and kidney disease, the preservation of kidney health, and the treatment of kidney disease, from diet and medication to renal replacement therapy. Nephrologists have advanced training in treating kidney disease. They diagnose and treat kidney failure, as well as help patients by prescribing medications, offering special diet advice, and coordinating dialysis care or kidney transplantation when it becomes necessary.
