About

John A. Coccaro, MD, is a anesthesiologist and interventional pain management physician who diagnoses and treats patients at Precision Pain Management in Toms River, New Jersey, which he established in 2014. His practice offers advanced treatments for acute and chronic pain, including regenerative medicine, MILD (Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression), as well as Vertiflex™ Superion® minimally invasive spinal decompression. Dr. Coccaro treats both acute and chronic pain conditions, such as sciatica, spinal stenosis, auto injuries, herniated discs, slip and falls, pinched nerves, and all types of back and neck pain. His practice also addresses issues of opioid addiction. “My philosophy on interventional pain management […] is direct and precise by isolating and treating one pain source or pain generator at a time. My approach avoids dogmatic thinking such as a “series of three” […]. Listening to the patient’s problems is the essential beginnings of my interaction with a patient and is paramount to my approach”, says Dr. John A. Coccaro about his approach to pain medicine. Prior to his current endeavors, he served as an anesthesiologist at the Community Medical Center in Toms River, NJ. Moreover, Dr. Coccaro is active in providing health care to underprivileged communities. His endeavors include a volunteer mission trip to Haiti with the Hospital of the Sacred Heart in Milot, Haiti. “My humble beginnings started in Brooklyn… The people who lived there […] worked for the good of their family and their bodies suffered for it. It was through their suffering that I saw my future in medicine and so my decision to become a doctor was more one of fate rather than being born into it”, expresses Dr. John A. Coccaro.

Get to know Anesthesiologist & Interventional Pain Management Physician Dr. John A. Coccaro, who serves patients in Toms River, New Jersey.

Patients can expect personalized attention and compassionate care in a warm and inviting setting at Precision Pain Management in Toms River, New Jersey. The practice is led by Dr. Coccaro, a board-certified anesthesiologist & interventional pain management physician specializing in treating chronic and acute pain.

“My philosophy on interventional pain management employs a simple and pragmatic approach to the control of pain. It is direct and precise by isolating and treating one pain source or pain generator at a time. My approach avoids dogmatic thinking such as a “series of three” when it was evident the first of three showed no improvement or promise of relief at all. Listening to the patient’s problems is the essential beginning of my interaction with a patient and is paramount to my approach” as stated by the doctor.

With a strong desire to care for people, he and the team at Precision Pain Management focus on treating one pain source at a time to reduce the effects of chronic pain. They also address issues of opioid addiction at the pain management center, suggesting a variety of non-opioid treatment options.

“My humble beginnings started in Brooklyn...a place with a great sense of neighborhood where you knew who your neighbors were and city blocks became an integral part of families. The people who lived there were more than “next door”, they were people who took care of one another and gave back to the community. They worked for the good of their family and their bodies suffered for it. It was through their suffering that I saw my future in medicine and so my decision to become a doctor was more one of fate rather than being born into it” expressed Dr. Coccaro.

A graduate of St. George’s University School of Medicine, he established a reputation for superior surgical hand skills during a residency at Monmouth Medical Center where he gained unique insights into care and therapy of trauma and neurosurgical patients. It was at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, a true learning center of excellence, where his passion for anesthesia and interventional pain medicine was fostered.  As a resident physician, he developed a great interest and appreciation for pediatric regional anesthesia and adult pain medicine and had performed thousands of procedures in the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain using ultrasound and fluoroscopy.

The doctor’s post-residency training led him to minimally invasive procedures for treating various spine related symptoms. Most recently, he served the Toms River area practicing as a board-certified anesthesiologist at Community Medical Center.

Dedicating his career to the care and treatment of the pain patient, Dr. Coccaro is board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA), whose mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. As the certifying body for anesthesiologists since 1938, the ABA is committed to partnering with physicians to advance lifelong learning and exceptional patient care.

Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. Anesthesiologists have the primary responsibility of monitoring the patient’s vital signs during surgery. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure, and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.

Interventional pain management or interventional pain medicine is a medical subspecialty which treats pain with invasive interventions such as facet joint injections, nerve blocks, neuroaugmentation, vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, nucleoplasty, endoscopic discectomy, and implantable drug delivery system. As an interventional pain management physician, Dr. Coccaro focuses on the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of pain.
