  • When is a person recommended to take sleeping tablets?

There is real reason to avoid giving sleep medicines to elderly patients. It increases their risk of falls and also their risk of cognitive impairment (confusion). Insomnia is a serious and challenging problem. Common reasons need to be explored rather than simply covered up. Look for anxiety, depression, sleep apnea, periodic limb movement disorder, medication side effects, maladaptive behaviors, and other medical conditions. Each has its own treatment. There is a behavioral technique called cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia which in controlled studies is as effective as sleeping medication. It may be worth seeing a sleep specialist rather than a general physician, who may not have the experience required to pursue this in detail. READ MORE

  • Is there a connection between lack of sleep and constipation?

Irritable bowel syndrome is more common in patients with insomnia. So is heartburn and indigestion. Both insomnia and digestive problems are extremely common and there really isn't much data to support a mechanistic link between insomnia and constipation. Anxiety, however, is known to cause both. Medications can also do this. Treat the constipation as you always would with a healthy diet, fiber, and stool softener if necessary. READ MORE

  • My BP medicine is causing me to sleep too much. What should I do?

Only a handful of modern blood pressure medicines can cause sleepiness. If it is in fact 1 of those medicines, it should get changed. Just stopping it for a few days with doctor's permission would allow you to know how important the medicine is at causing sleepiness. If it is in fact the cause, there are likely many suitable alternatives. It's dangerous to be sleepy because of the risk of falling asleep driving. Please be careful until this is fully addressed. • I am traveling next week to a foreign country. Is Zolfresh safe for regulating my sleep cycle?

That is a brand of zolpidem. It's a standard sedative hypnotic. In the United States, the maximum dose for women recommended by the FDA is 5 milligrams. It is 10 milligrams for men. Like all sedative hypnotics, it can be associated with poor cognitive function until it has worn off, and if it is used for sleep on an airplane, it should be taken at least 7-8 hours before getting off the airplane. This is to ensure that the traveler is not impaired for transfers or driving, etc. It is probably wise to take medicine such as this at least once at home in the safety of one's house to be sure that there are no unexpected sedative side effects before using it. • Is it considered safe to be on sleep medicines for over eight months?

The medicines described above are generally used for anxiety, depression, seizures, or motion disorders. They are not typical sedative medications and are usually given long-term. The underlying illness that causes their use is generally a long-term illness and one would expect that the medications therefore would be needed for a long time. Depression and anxiety can be lifelong illnesses. Insomnia in that setting is simply a symptom along with many others and controlling it is a reasonable thing. Unfortunately, all psychiatric medicines can have side effects and need to be monitored. READ MORE
