Backpack Safety
As summer is winding down, families of school-aged children are getting ready to return to the classroom. This is a very busy time as everyone is heading to the stores to buy clothes, shoes, notebooks, calculators, pens, pencils...it seems never ending! An important investment in your child’s...
Everyone Poops!
Let's talk about something that some people have trouble discussing with their doctors. Most people wouldn't even dream of discussing bowel movements with their chiropractor so I'll start the conversation here. While reviewing a patient's history, something they say might make me question them...
May is Correct Posture Month
There seems to be a month for everything. Correct posture is very important to your health (as I typed that, I had to sit up straighter!) and therefore seems deserving of a month. It also seems that having poor posture is easier for everyone while having good posture is harder and requires a...
What is Chiropractic and is it Safe?
Chiropractic is the science, art, and philosophy of finding and correcting articular (joint) subluxations. What does that mean? A subluxation is the misalignment of the vertebrae that make up our spinal column. (The joints in your extremities can also become subluxated and be corrected through a...
Spring is in the Air
Being from Rhode Island, I didn't really like Spring for its weather. It could still snow up until April (or May!) and when it rained, it was usually very bitter and cold. The trees were bare and the grass wasn't green yet. The roads were still covered in sand and salt. But, the promise of Summer...
Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries
Getting into an accident can be a very stressful time. Immediate concerns are about calling the police, damage to your vehicle, getting a rental vehicle, and contacting your insurance company. Once the shock has worn off, you may wonder about getting an attorney and/or seeking medical care. You...
Why is Water Wonderful?
Back when I was a kid (insert eye roll), water was water. It wasn't marketed like it is now. Brands like Dasani and Aquafina weren't introduced until the 1990s. I didn't like to drink water as a kid and I remember the first time I drank soda. I was amazed at how good it tasted. As I grew up, I...
Alternative Treatment Instruments in Chiropractic
While chiropractic is widely known for manual adjustments (cracking), there are effective alternatives within the profession. Two such alternatives are pictured in this post. The larger one, called an Arthrostim, is electric and the smaller one, called an Activator, is operated manually. Pictured...
Let's Talk About Necks, Baby!
The most common hesitation I hear about with my patients is their concern about getting their necks "cracked". Part of the reason for this is what they have seen in the movies or online, stories that are passed around, and other personal reasons. The neck is actually my favorite part of the body to...
Chiropractic Care and Pregnancy
Congratulations! You're pregnant! You're eating better, drinking more water, and less caffeine. Maybe you stopped smoking. Looking into Lamaze classes, Mom groups, preschools, and prenatal massage. All parents want the best start for their children. What better way than to make sure that the...
Best Ways to Sleep
This is a favorite topic of mine. If you're sleeping enough, you spend 1/3 of your life in bed. People realize that they slouch while they're awake but seem surprised when I point out that they are probably "slouching in bed". People also seem to think that the best sleeping position is on your...
Should you rest after chiropractic adjustment?
While it is not necessary for you to rest after your adjustment, you might want to. Some people feel energized after an adjustment while others feel very relaxed and sleepy. READ MORE
Can you straighten your spine if you have scoliosis?
The age of the patient with scoliosis is very important to their likelihood of a positive response. The younger scoliosis is diagnosed and treated, the better. Usually, the curve measurements can decrease with chiropractic care but don't count on it being completely straight afterward, especially with large curve angles. READ MORE
How should I sleep to improve my posture?
Basically, you want to support your spine. If on your back, support the curve under your neck rather than letting your pillow push your head forward. Place something under your knees so they are bent. If you are a side sleeper, don't curl up into a ball. Match the top leg with the bottom leg, keep your top arm along your ribs, and raise your chin. Your neck should be in a straight line with the rest of your spine. READ MORE
Should I see a chiropractor for a slipped disc?
Chiropractors are trained to diagnose and treat vertebral disc disorders. There are many ways you can be treated with a disc injury. Be sure to share your entire health history and bring a copy of any MRI reports and/or disk images if you already had an MRI. READ MORE
Why do I get headaches after chiropractic care?
There could be several reasons for this to happen. After your exam, your chiropractor determined that you were a candidate for adjustments. In many cases, people will feel soreness after an adjustment, especially if this is the first one ever or the first one in a long time. I compare adjustments to having braces put on or when the braces are tightened throughout the time you have them. A change is being made to your body and sometimes there will be new or additional soreness. As long as it is nothing too extreme, it is usually considered "within normal limits". The headaches should stop after a few treatments. If they don't, I would change the adjusting technique and see how you respond to that. READ MORE
Can chiropractors help with a dislocated shoulder?
I personally don't reduce dislocated shoulders. I think you could benefit from chiropractic care after your shoulder is more stable. READ MORE
Can chiropractors adjust ankles?
Yes! Chiropractors can adjust ankles. In fact, it's something that I do frequently. The way I see it is if your ankles and feet are out of alignment, every step you take is with altered/abnormal biomechanics. READ MORE
Can chiropractors help with heel pain?
It would depend on what is causing your heel pain. If you have a heel spur, that is not something that we can get rid of for you. An x-ray will show if there is a spur present. If the pain is from soft tissue or a misalignment in your foot/ankle/heel, then chiropractic can help. READ MORE
What happens after frozen shoulder manipulation?
Good morning. I am not sure exactly what you mean so I will talk about a few things. If you mean MUA (manipulation under anesthesia), I don't do that so I can't speak about it. If you want to know how I treat a frozen shoulder, that's easier. If it is a more advanced case, I would recommend PT and chiropractic. If it is new or a milder case, I would adjust you with a focus on your shoulder, upper back, and neck. I would put your shoulder through passive range of motion stretches to your tolerance. This is a condition that requires participation from you, meaning you need to do exercises at home in addition to what is done for you in the office. I hope this helps and if you want more information, please reach out again. I would love the opportunity to help you. I apologize for the delayed response - I had company in town this weekend from New England. READ MORE
Should I get chiropractic adjustments for sciatica?
Yes, I think you would benefit from chiropractic care. You would have a thorough history review and exam to make sure you are a chiropractic candidate. Sciatica is one of the most common problems we treat. READ MORE
