How do you know if back pain is muscle or disc?
To really figure this out would take a full history, examination, and possibly diagnostic imaging. A few clues: Can you "put your finger on it"? If you can press on a tender spot, that is likely muscle. A second one: Is there pain, numbness, or tingling that radiates below the knee? There is a good chance that is from a disc. It is also possible to have both at the same time! READ MORE
Will exercise help achy legs?
That depends on what is causing the achiness. If you have muscle soreness from a workout heat, light exercise and Epsom salt baths can all be helpful. If you don't know why your legs are achy I would recommend you go see your doctor for an evaluation. READ MORE
What exercises help herniated discs?
Mackenzie exercises, typically into extension (bending backwards) are the most popular, but it depends on your unique situation. Something we like to see for disc pain related exercise is that they "centralize" your symptoms. That means if you have pain, numbness or tingling in the extremities that the exercises help bring the symptoms in closer to your spine. READ MORE
How should I sleep with neck pain?
Finding a supportive and comfortable pillow is a great place to start. "Comfortable" is subjective so you will need to experiment a little bit. I like fiber or memory foam pillows. In general, if you are a side sleeper, you will need a thicker pillow that if you are a back sleeper. Stomach sleeping can work for some, but often is not the best for those with neck or back pain. Is chiropractic treatment safe?
Most likely, yes! For most people, chiropractic care, when properly performed, is incredibly safe. A complete history and examination would need to be performed to make sure you are a candidate for care, but compared to many other treatment options, chiropractic care has an enviable safely record. Should you rest after chiropractic adjustment?
It depends on what you are being treated for, what type of treatment/adjustment will be done, and how your body responds. All of those are factors and you should ask your chiropractor about them. However, in my experience most people are fine to go about their normal activities after an adjustment. READ MORE
Can a chiropractor or massage therapist help with migraine headaches?
Migraines can be absolutely debilitating and there are many potential causes, but chiropractic care and massage are often very helpful! Joint restrictions and tight muscles in your neck can be causes of migraines and chiropractic care can absolutely help relieve them. READ MORE

An award-winning, nationally renowned chiropractor, Dr. McCary works alongside his wife, Dr. Danielle McCary, at Laurelhurst Chiropractic. He treats each patient as an individual, naturally, to reduce pain and optimize health by increasing function and decreasing stress on the body.
A unique Portland, Oregon chiropractic clinic, Laurelhurst Chiropractic provides acupuncture & neuromuscular therapy for best chiropractic treatment outcomes. Consisting of a team with 30+ years of experience, issues such as back pain, neck pain, sciatica, scoliosis, car accident related injuries, headaches, and shoulder pain are treated. Likewise, full-body chiropractic adjustments and chiropractic neck adjustments are offered.
Long before he ever thought of becoming Doctor of Chiropractic, Dr. McCary was a chiropractic patient. His first adjustment was before he can remember. His father had a severe lower back injury that made it impossible for him to work on the family farm. He had sought the advice of many doctors with no answers until being referred to the local small town Chiropractor. Dr. McCary was only a few months old at the time and had been constipated for about one week. His father was telling the chiropractor about this at one of his visits and the doc said, “Let me take a look at him.” She performed a few gentle adjustments and the little family headed out.
By the time they made it home, his Osh-Kosh overalls were overflowing, the flood gates were open! Dr. McCary continued to be a chiropractic patient all the way through university, competing as a sprinter and 400m hurdler for the University of Washington.
Thereafter, he attended the University of Western States where he met his future wife, and graduated with his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 2009. They took over Laurelhurst Chiropractic in 2014, but the clinic was founded in 1996.
Recognized by multiple leading organizations, Dr. McCary is a member of the Oregon Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), the American Academy of Pain Medicine, the ACA Council for Diagnostic Imaging, the ACA Council for Forensic Sciences, the ACA Council for Neurology, and the ACA Council for Occupational Health.
Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that mainly deals with the diagnosis and treatment of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. A chiropractor uses spinal adjustments, manipulation, and other techniques to manage patients’ health concerns, including neck pain, back pain, headaches, vertigo and a long list of other ailments and conditions. They aim to improve patients’ functionality and quality of life by properly aligning the body’s musculoskeletal structure and enabling the body to heal itself naturally, without the use of medication or surgery.
Based on evidence of superior training, experience, continuing education and commitment to excellence, Dr. McCary was named America’s Best Chiropractors in 2020 by the National Consumer Advisory Board.
An avid athlete, he competed as a sprinter and 400m hurdler for the University of Washington. He feels like regular adjustments were a huge part of keeping him healthy and allowing him to compete against athletes that were much more physically talented.
