    Usually, rest, and ice to reduce inflammation. Then warm moist heat to gently stretch muscle prior to stretching/ home exercise program. If hurting after stretching/HEP then ice x 20 minutes every couple of hours to reduce pain and inflammation. May return to lifting/working out once full motion without pain and good strength. Mild strains can take 2-4 weeks to resolve, moderate strains can take 4-6 weeks to resolve and severe can take up to 12 weeks to fully heal and then gradual return to activities. READ MORE

    Lower weights with higher repetitions. Heavier weights or being heavy does indeed stress your joints. Weight reduction is beneficial to your joints and overall health.     There are many over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications you may take if you have no medical contraindications to those medicines; but, you may need to have your knees evaluated as to why there is swelling....could be arthritis, or cartilage tears.     A sport conditioning program is helpful. Strengthening and flexibility is important. You may get hinged knee braces to help protect your knees, but a home exercise program is very important to protect your knees. Also, a sport specific training program is very helpful. Braces cannot protect from all injuries, and wearing braces without a conditioning program may actually weaken your muscles which support your knee, thereby making your knees more vulnerable to injury.
