  • My chest X-ray shows haziness. Please give me your opinion.

    Haziness on any chest X-ray could represent pneumonia, fluid, blood and a number of other pathological conditions. Depending on how significant the haziness is the next step may be follow up radiology study after treatment of cough . A cat scan of Chest may be able to demonstrate haziness with better understanding. READ MORE

  • Why do I have trouble breathing while pregnant?

    Feeling of breathlessness is common among pregnant woman. The main cause is the pregnancy hormones that cause increase respiratory drive. Increase in abdominal girth also causes the feeling of difficulty breathing. Having said this, any trouble breathing should be seen by a physician to make sure that is not due to a medical problem such as asthma, hypertension, anemia, or a number of other causes of shortness of breath.   • Can you hear pneumonia with a stethoscope?

    Pneumonia can cause crackles on lung examination. On lung auscultation, we can also preform the Egophony test. By instructing the patient to say a long "E," we can hear a "E to A transition" where the sound has a more "A" like quality in patients with pneumonia.     Crackling can be a sign of Pneumonia but it can also be heard with lungs scarring and Congestive heart failure and hence crackles are not specific to Pneumonia .     While I can't answer a specific question related to your specific complain, I will give an answer as it relates to most patients. Lung nodules on CT scan of chest is very common and the main reason to follow them is to make sure they are not caused by cancer. Large nodules are usually biopsied and smaller nodules will require careful follow-up with periodic CAT scan examinations. READ MORE

    I can't give specific advice pertaining to you as a patient. I feel that anybody who has serious chest congestion with chest pain should be seen immediately in an ER or Urgent care for evaluation. This could be Pneumonia, and early antibiotics is absolutely vital. READ MORE

    Most patients with pneumonia are very sick with fever, cough, chest pain and they may need to be hospitalized. Dr. Gupta is an experienced and compassionate pulmonologist who has been in practice since 1995. He began his practice at Houston Pulmonary Medicine Associates, PA and for the past two decades has saved countless number of lives.

Holding academic positions at both Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Dr. Gupta precepts and mentors medical, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students. 

In addition to being a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians (FCCP) and a Fellow of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (FAASM), he is a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Texas Medical Association.

The doctor’s journey into medicine began after he obtained his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery degree from Maulana Azad Medical College in India in 1987. He then went on to perform his residency in internal medicine at the State University of New York in 1992, and his fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of Virginia in 1995. 

Dedicated to excellence, Dr. Gupta is board-certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.
