In practice for more than 30 years, he and his staff at Powell Orthodontics are dedicated to providing the highest quality orthodontic experience, delivering smiles that enrich people’s confidence and lives. Located in Georgia, Powell Orthodontics offers clear and metal braces for all ages, Invisalign treatment for adults and teens, dentofacial orthopedics and surgical orthodontics, iTero Element intraoral digital scans, as well as individualized treatment plans to residents in Evans, Martinez, Grovetown, Augusta, and surrounding communities.
A native of Augusta, Dr. Powell attended Martinez Elementary and Evans High School. His Bachelor of Science in Biology was awarded by Augusta State University, where he graduated cum laude. He then went on to attend the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, where he graduated first in his class with his Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry degree. Following dental school, he completed a general practice residency at the Naval Hospital in Camp Pendleton, California and then served four years with the United States Navy Dental Corps. After completing his service, he returned to the Medical College of Georgia, where he completed a rigorous two-year residency in orthodontics.
A believer in continuing education, Dr. Powell chooses to participate in a range of continuing education opportunities so that he can provide his patients with the best care possible. Each year, he takes online courses, attends meetings, reads multiple specialty journals, and consults with other orthodontists and oral healthcare specialists. “Continuing education keeps me abreast of current research and techniques. In turn, this improves my treatment approach, diagnostic abilities, and treatment planning, which allows me to provide the best care and orthodontic experience for each patient” he stated.
Additionally, he teaches at the August University Orthodontic Residency Program. In his classes, he covers multiple orthodontic and business topics, including treatment planning and clinical processes.
In order to stay up to date in his field, Dr. Powell maintains membership with several professional organizations, including the Augusta Dental Society, the Eastern District Dental Society, the Georgia Dental Association, the Georgia Association of Orthodontists, the Southern Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Orthodontists, the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontics, and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society.
Orthodontics is a specialty of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of malpositioned teeth and jaws. As an orthodontist, Dr. Powell is responsible for locating problems with the positioning of patients’ teeth and with their oral development. He utilizes the most advanced procedures and equipment available to ensure that every patient achieves a healthy and beautiful smile. “Taking someone from feeling ashamed of their teeth to having a broad, beautifully healthy and confident smile is the most incredible experience: as an orthodontist, I do it every day!” he stated.
Beyond his practice, Dr. Powell and his wife, Debbie, have been happily married for over 35 years. They have four wonderful adult children. Although he and Debbie are technically empty-nesters, they love animals and currently have five rescues: two dogs and three cats. Each has their own personality and needs and brings happiness to their household.
When not at the office, Dr. Powell is usually at Debbie’s side as her handyman. She has a residential rental business that keeps her and Dr. Powell quite busy.
