With well over four decades of experience in his field, the doctor is board-certified in emergency medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine, which is a not-for-profit organization that certifies emergency physicians who meet its educational, professional, and examination standards. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP).

As a consultant for disaster medicine, Dr. Bern has participated in the creation of an educational program for the State of Florida, working through and with the Florida College of Emergency Physicians. He is also a past member of the Board of Directors of the Florida College of Emergency Physicians and the American College of Emergency Physicians. 

Emergency medicine, also known as accident and emergency medicine, is the medical specialty concerned with the care of illnesses or injuries requiring immediate medical attention. An emergency physician is a physician who works at an emergency department to care for acutely ill or injured patients. They care for unscheduled and undifferentiated patients of all ages.

In honor of his clinical expertise, Dr. Bern is the 2019 recipient of the Pamela P. Bensen Trailblazer Award by the American College of Emergency Physicians.
