“When I decided that dentistry would be my profession, it was because I had a calling to serve and help people.This is the main reason I decided to embrace this passion of mine. I have experienced all different forms of professional dental settings- from hospital to private practice and on through public health. Respect and dedication are the two most valuable traits that serve as my core foundations in this profession. Independent to people’s social class or means, I always treat every single patient the same way as I would treat myself. I believe that to serve as a dentist is an honor and a privilege” expressed Dr. Filho.
Holding academic positions, he is the Clinical Director of the Dental Assisting Teaching Academy (2017 to date), an External Affiliate Instructor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry (10/2012 to date), and a Guest Professor for the General Practice Residency in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery & Dentistry at the University of Miami (06/2009 to date).
Born in Brazil in 1976, Dr. Filho earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Farias Brito College in 1993. He then finished dental school at Federal University of Ceara School of Dentistry, earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1999. He practiced dentistry in Brazil for 5 years and did his post-graduation in minor oral surgery, public health management, as well as in dental prosthetics and dental occlusion.
After moving with his family to the United States in 2003 to further his dental education, Dr. Filho completed his General Practice Residency in Dentistry as well as his Fellowship in Dental Implant Prosthetics at the University of Miami / Jackson Memorial Hospital. After concluding his studies, he was invited to stay as a faculty at the University of Miami.
Furthering his knowledge of the dental field, Dr. Filho completed hands-on training in CEREC 3D CAD/CAM from Patterson Dental, Triangle Dental Institute, and Harvard University. He was accepted as a student for the Master’s degree program in Implant Dentistry at Goethe Dental School in Germany (2022).
Attaining fellowship status, Dr. Filho is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry (FAGD) and a Fellow of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (FICOI).
His professional and honorary organizations include membership status with the Brazilian International Academy of Literature, the American Academy of Oral Medicine (Associate), the American Dental Association (Associate), the Dental Academy of Ceara – Brazil (Associate), the Brazilian Dental Association (Associate), the University of Miami Educational Development Office (Associate Member), and the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Research).
On a professional level, Dr. Filho is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support by the American Heart Association, board-certified by the American Dental Association, and holds a dental license through the Brazilian Council of Dentistry.
Dentistry, also known as Dental and Oral Medicine, is a branch of medicine that consists of the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders, and conditions of the oral cavity. Dentists diagnose and treat dental issues and help patients develop better oral hygiene regimens. They clean teeth, correct bite issues, perform surgeries and extractions, and perform other duties to ensure that the teeth and mouth are healthy.
Doing charity work in the United States and Brazil, Dr. Filho is involved with his family charity, Alencar Family Foundation. He also serves in the same capacity with the Chesapeake Care Clinic / Hampton Roads Dental Center, providing dental services and oversight to VCU dental students.
Recognized for excellence in dentistry, Dr. Filho is featured and listed on Marquis Who’s Who as they celebrate the accomplishments and highlight the work, influence, and impact of some exemplary professionals. He has also been the recipient of the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award; Top 100 Doctors as the 2022 Dentist of the Year, Virginia; Better Business Bureau Ethics Award for Alencar Family Dentistry, 2019; America’s Best Dentist Award by Consumers’ Research Council of America, 2009, 2007; Second Place – Table Clinic (American College of Dentists/Florida Section), 2008; Outstanding Patient Care by General Practice Residency Program (University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital), 2007, among many others.
Crediting his dedication to his family, as well as his dedication to remaining true to his own beliefs, Dr. Filho is the author of the science fiction book, “Singularity”, published in 2020.
Happily married, he and his wife have a son. During his spare time, he likes to spend time with his family. He also loves sports and likes to play tennis and run 5Ks.
