I think I have varicose veins. How is this treated?
The treatment of varicose veins includes multiple modalities to close or remove the veins, i.e., Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA), Radiofrequency Ablation, Clarivein, Varithena, VenaSeal, Ambulatory Phlebectomy, and Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy. Alternatively, one may select a conservative therapy, i.e., wearing compression stockings/apparel. Always consult a fellowship-trained and American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM) Certified vascular specialist, for a consultation, evaluation, and treatment plan that's best for your lifestyle. My brother has been diagnosed with venous insufficiency. What is it and how can it be treated?
Normally, healthy legs have valves in the veins that move blood toward the heart and close not allowing backward flow of blood. Venous insufficiency, also referred to as venous reflux disease, develops when the vein valves no longer work/close appropriately and allow a backward flow (reflux) of blood in the lower legs. There are multiple treatment modalities to treat venous insufficiency (that close or stop the backward flow of blood), some of which include: Endovenous laser ablation, Radiofrequency Ablation, Clarivein, and Venaseal. I have venous inflammation in my legs. What could be the reason for this?
Chronic Venous disease, mainly due to venous reflux (or sometimes venous outflow obstruction) may be the trigger of this inflammation in your legs. The most common cause of venous inflammation is a slower blood flow. This facilitates the inflammatory cascade leading to inflammatory reactions on the venous wall, often in connection with varicose veins. Venous inflammation may also be caused by indwelling catheters, an injury to the venous wall or penetrating bacteria, as well as, after operations and longer periods on immobility (i.e., confinement to bed). The treatment depends on the cause, the location (i.e., what vein system, superficial vs deep), time frame of symptoms (if treated promptly or remained untreated over longer period of time). I sometimes have a sharp pain at night in my calf muscles. Could it be something serious?
Night leg cramps are one of the common symptoms of vein disease. It is possible that cramps of the legs may be related to chronic venous insufficiency. When one has venous insufficiency the venous blood refluxs (flows backward) down the veins and pools in the legs. This pooling of venous blood is a source of the symptoms of vein disease, including leg cramps. READ MORE
Does varicose veins need to be treated with surgery?
Varicose Veins are standardly treated via "non-surgical minimally invasive" procedures. There are several treatment modality options. During your father’s consultation with an American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine certified vein specialist the best treatment/procedure option for his venous condition and lifestyle should be recommended. How is varicose veins diagnosed in a person?
Great question! Each patient's condition of varicose veins is unique. One should make a consultation with a Certified Vein Specialist, lookk for 'DIplomate" of the American Board of Venous and Lymphatic Medicine (ABVLM). During your consultation one should expect to have your medical history reviewed, a diagnostic ultrasound (which provides a specific "mapping" of the source of your individual vascular problem), have a venous evaluation, a set of photos of the areas affected, and a "customized" treatment plan for your varicose veins and lifestyle will be prepared for you and explained in detail.
