Honing her skills on her way up the career ladder, Dr. Guye serves as a surgical oncology representative on several hospital committees, including the Breast Program Leadership Committee of Sentara – Dorothy G. Hoefer Comprehensive Breast Center, the Breast Leadership Committee of Sentara System Wide, the Melanoma & Cutaneous Cancer Program, the Sentara Careplex Hospital Cancer Committee, as well as the Research Advisory Council of the Sentara Cancer Research Network. She also serves as a Clinical Investigator through the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program, which is a part of the National Cancer Institute.

Among her academic faculty appointments, Dr. Guye is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia. Prior to this role, she served as an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at Wright State University Boonshoft School of Medicine.

After earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Christopher Newport University in 1993, Dr. Guye went on to obtain her medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences – F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland in 1997. She completed her internship in general surgery at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium ​- Wilford Hall Medical Center, followed by her residency in general surgery at the same educational venue and at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. She later completed a clinical fellowship in surgical oncology at the City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center in Duarte, California in 2013. 

In addition to her extensive training in the medical field, including the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative, Dr. Guye has vast knowledge in the military setting. She completed her military education at the Defense Medical Readiness Training Institute and the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine – to name a few. 

Being a retired Colonel in the United States Air Force – Medical Corps, she completed her military assignments at David Grant USAF Medical Center, Armed Forces Institute of Technology, Wright-Patterson Medical Center, Yokota Hospital, Wilford Hall Medical Center, and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences – F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. She served 5 tours overseas to combat zones in support of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. 

For her military service, Dr. Guye was honored with several awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, five Meritorious Service Medals, the Army Commendation Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon, the Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, the Air Force Overseas Ribbon Short, the Air Force Overseas Ribbon Long, the Air Force Training Ribbon, the Nato Medal, the Meritorious Unit Award, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. 

Pertaining to the doctor’s medical achievements, she was named “Sentara Medical Group Top Performing Provider 2019” by Sentara Medical Group, “Top Surgical Oncologist” in 2019 and 2020)by Virginia Magazine, “Top Doctors” for Surgical Oncology in 2019 by Coastal Virginia Magazine, “America’s Top Surgeons” in 2017 by the Consumers’ Research Council of America, and “Top Doctor” in 2017 by The Leading Physicians of the World.

A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology, Dr. Guye also remains an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Association of Women Surgeons, the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons, and J. Bradley Aust Surgical Society.

What’s more, she is board-certified in both general surgery and complex general surgical oncology by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The mission of the ABS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.

Having made numerous presentations and publications in areas relating to her field, Dr. Guye also holds certifications in Advanced Trauma Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Basic Life Support. 

Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology; it focuses on the surgical management of tumors. A surgical oncologist is a surgeon who has special training in treating cancer. They are most often the first among oncologic specialists to see the patient. 

On a more personal note, Dr. Guye enjoys listening to classical music. She and her husband have two sons. They enjoy spending time outdoors, going to the beach, and hiking.
