An experienced neurologist, Dr. Lopez serves as the Chief of the Division of Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology and Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at UPMC Montefiore. He is also a Professor of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Clinical and Translational Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
UPMC Montefiore was founded as Montefiore Hospital in 1908, thanks to the efforts of the Ladies Hospital Aid Society (LHAS). Today, UPMC Montefiore is part of UPMC Presbyterian, which is a medical-surgical referral hospital and a site of ongoing research and graduate programs providing specialized medical care to patients from the tristate area and throughout the world.
A native of Argentina, Dr. Lopez received his medical education at Universidad Nacional de la Plata Facultad de Ciencias Médicas in 1980, and completed his residency in neurology at Rivadavia Hospital. After relocating to the United States, he completed his fellowship in behavioral neurology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His clinical interests include cognitive disorders of multiple etiologies, and his research interests include clinical symptoms and progression of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, biomarkers, and risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease in cognitively normal persons.
Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (FAAN), the doctor is board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.
On a professional level, he has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and is an active member of the American Academy of Neurology, the Royal Society of Medicine, the American Neurological Association, the American Society of Behavioral Neurology, and the International Psychogeriatric Association.
