Born in Dublin, Ireland, Dr. Ramsay earned his medical degree from London Hospital Medical College in 1968. He then went on to complete his internship, residency, and fellowship at London Hospital, where he served as a consultant. Before long, he became board-certified in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology, whose mission is to advance the highest standards of the practice of anesthesiology. 

A sought-after lecturer both nationally and internationally, Dr. Ramsay has lectured on topics such as liver transplantation, sedation, opioid-induced respiratory depression, and other patient safety issues. He has given more than 300 invited presentations and lectures at conferences, seminars, and symposia worldwide. He has also published over 200 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals, multiple chapters in major textbooks, as well as numerous abstracts and original articles. 

Dr. Ramsay developed the first sedation scoring system for intensive care patients, Ramsay Sedation Scale, which is widely used throughout the world. 

Currently, the doctor is involved in a number of clinical research projects for which he is the principal investigator. His current research includes the role of nitric oxide in ameliorating the reperfusion injury in liver transplantation. Anesthesiology is the medical specialty concerned with the total perioperative care of patients before, during, and after surgery. It encompasses anesthesia, intensive care medicine, critical emergency medicine, and pain medicine. In addition to basic measurements such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature, anesthesiologists also measure the patient’s respiration.

Happily married, Dr. Ramsay and his wife, Zöe, have four children. He enjoys fly fishing and his favorite spot is in the Alaskan wilderness, where one has to compete with the grizzlies and eagles for the fish. His favorite movie is “Don Quixote”, his favorite color is green, and his favorite holiday is Christmas.
