A board-certified hematologist-oncologist, Dr. Witt welcomes patients at Smilow Cancer Center in Trumbull, Connecticut. Academically, he serves as Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine (Medical Oncology) at Yale School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut.

Dr. Witt is a 1978-graduate of the New York University School of Medicine in New York. Following a three year residency in internal medicine conducted at Lenox Hill Hospital (1978 – 1981), he completed a hematology-oncology fellowship at Beth Israel Medical Center (1981 – 1984)

Following his training, Dr. Witt attained board certification in internal medicine, medical oncology, and hematology through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The American Board of Internal Medicine is a 501 nonprofit, self-appointed physician-evaluation organization that certifies physicians practicing internal medicine and its subspecialties. 

Hematology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study of the cause, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases related to blood. It involves treating diseases that affect the production of blood and its components, such as blood cells, hemoglobin, blood proteins, bone marrow, platelets, blood vessels, spleen, and the mechanism of coagulation. Such diseases might include hemophilia, blood clots (thrombus), other bleeding disorders, and blood cancers such as leukemia, multiple myeloma, and lymphoma.

Oncology is the study of cancer. The field of oncology has three major areas: medical, surgical, and radiation. A medical oncologist treats cancer using chemotherapy or other medications, such as targeted therapy or immunotherapy. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. A radiation oncologist treats cancer using radiation therapy.
