After earning an undergraduate degree in 1987 at the University of Miami, Dr. Steffen received his medical degree in 1991 at the University of Miami School of Medicine. After a one-year internship at Keesler Medical Center (1991 – 1992), he completed his orthopedic surgery residency at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium/Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB (1994 – 1998). Dr. Steffen performed his fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center – San Antonio (2000 – 2001). In the US Air Force Medical Force, he served as USAF Flight Surgeon at McConnell AFB in Kansas, Theater Flight Surgeon in Restore Hope (Somalia, Africa), and Teaching Staff for Emory Riddle University in Florida.
Dr. Steffen attained board certification in orthopedic surgery through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). The ABOS is an organization with the goal of establishing educational and professional standards for orthopedic residents and surgeons as well as evaluating the qualifications and competence of orthopedic surgeons. It is a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
