Is teeth whitening safe for your mouth?
As long as your using a reputable whitening system it is safe to whiten your teeth. The best system is the one your dentist can provide. It will get you the best results. The only side effect is some people will experience sensitivity for 23-48 hours after but then it should go back to normal. READ MORE
Why does a cracked tooth have to be pulled?
A tooth with a crack in it does not always need to be pulled. It depends on the situation. If it has completely cracked into the bone then yes it needs to be pulled. If not you might be able to save the tooth with a crown, root canal, both or many other treatment options. Once again it depends on what exactly is going on with your tooth. READ MORE
When is a root canal recommended?
A root canal is needed when the nerve of the tooth has died and an infection has occurred. Also, if there is decay present that has grown into the nerve. Most times, but not always, you will have pain or your dentist can show you on your X-ray what is happening and if it is needed. READ MORE
How can I tell if I'm grinding my teeth?
If your jaw hurts or feels very tense in the morning that is usually a great indication that you are clenching and grinding. Over time you will see your teeth start to show wear on them or if you shine a light on your teeth you will start to see fracture lines also. It’s best to get a mouth guard made for this to help keep your teeth healthy and help prevent fracturing your teeth. READ MORE
Can my silver fillings be replaced with white fillings?
Yes, you can always get your fillings replaced with composite restorations (tooth-colored fillings). I would speak to your dentist about it. READ MORE
How often do you need your teeth cleaned?
You should see your dentist at least twice a year for cleanings and exams. You should also get X-rays taken once a year. If you follow this you’ll be able to catch problems early before they become major treatment issues and also prevent gum disease that could cause other health issues. READ MORE
Can my diabetes affect my teeth?
Yes if your diabetes is not being well controlled it can make you more susceptible to dental infections in the gums and bone. Also these infections can be harder to treat and can progress quicker. READ MORE
Do cavities ever need to be refilled?
Yes, fillings do need to be replaced over time. If it’s only been a year there could be other things going on with the tooth. If your in pain it could be that the filling has cracked, come loose or there could be a problem with the nerve of the tooth and additional treatment needed. The only way to know is to have a dental professional examine the tooth and take an X-ray. Hope this helps. READ MORE
What is causing my teeth to yellow?
It’s not just coffee and smoking that will discolor teeth. Any food or drink that will stain clothing as well as dark foods and liquids will cause some staining of your teeth. Examples are wine, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce, and food sauces, just to name a few. Acidic foods will also cause your teeth to stain easily by eroding the outside layer of your teeth. Some medicines can also cause staining of the teeth, i.e., tetracyclines and doxycycline. Beyond bleaching your teeth to remove extrinsic stains is more diligent flossing and brushing to help minimize any new staining. READ MORE
