An educator and loving every jam-packed minute of it, he is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry within the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurobiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Kinney graduated with his medical degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine in 1985. He then went on to earn his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Anatomy from UAB in 1976, after which he performed his internship, residency, and postdoctoral fellowship at UAB Hospital.

Following his training, the doctor attained board certification in psychiatry through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). The ABPN is a not-for-profit corporation dedicated to serving the professions of psychiatry and neurology.

Psychiatry is the medical specialty devoted to the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. These include various maladaptations related to mood, behavior, cognition, and perceptions. Psychiatrists evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, prescribe medication, and evaluate treatment results.

Having been listed in the Best Doctors in America, Dr. Kinney has also been chosen for a number of honors, including the Exemplary Psychiatrist Award from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, several Argus Society Awards for Excellence in Teaching, and Outstanding Faculty Teacher by the UAB Psychiatry Residents Association.

From 2007-2012, he was a member of the Jefferson County Board of Health and served as chairman in 2010. He then served on the Board of the Jefferson County Medical Society from 2007-2016 and as Society president in 2015.

In 2018, Dr. Kinney earned the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Alabama Medical Alumni Association.
