He proceeded to attend Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, achieving the high honor of graduating in the top ten of his class. He remained at Baylor College of Medicine for his internship and residency in dermatology at the world-class Texas Medical Center. He then completed a fellowship in Mohs surgery and procedural dermatology at the Dayton Skin Surgery Center in Kettering, Ohio. This fellowship involved intensive training in Mohs and reconstructive surgery, laser surgery, and cosmetics.

A Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD) and a Fellow of the American College of Mohs Surgery (FACMS), Dr. Krathen is board-certified in dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD). The ABD is a voluntary, non-profit, private, autonomous organization formed for the primary purpose of protecting the public interest by establishing and maintaining high standards of training, education, and qualifications of physicians rendering care in dermatology.

A prominent professional in his field, Dr. Krathen has received numerous awards and recognitions, including the Alpha Omega Alpha Award and honors in basic sciences from Baylor College of Medicine. He has published over 25 articles in professional journals about dermatology and dermatologic surgery. He has also presented scientific studies and papers at various national professional meetings.
