Get to know Rheumatologist Dr. Mark Tan, who serves patients in Smithtown, New York.

A devoted rheumatologist, Dr. Tan works with patients at his private practice in Smithtown, New York. He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases such as arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, Kawasaki Disease, and other rheumatic diseases of the joints, soft tissue, and connective tissue.

Pertaining to his educational pursuits, he graduated with his medical degree from the University of Buffalo in 1983. He then went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at SUNY Stony Brook University Hospital in 1986, and his fellowship in rheumatology at Johns Hopkins University in 1989.

Subsequent to his education, the doctor attained board certification in rheumatology and internal medicine through the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM). The ABIM is a physician-led, non-profit, independent evaluation organization driven by doctors who want to achieve higher standards for better care in a rapidly changing world.

Rheumatology is a branch of medicine devoted to the diagnosis and treatment of rheumatic diseases. Physicians who have undergone formal training in rheumatology are called rheumatologists. Rheumatologists treat arthritis, autoimmune diseases and osteoporosis. 

Among his various accolades, Dr. Tan has been the recipient of the Compassionate Doctor Recognition (2018, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2012), Patients’ Choice Award (2018, 2016), and On-Time Doctor Award (2018).
