Get to know Gynecologic Oncologist Dr. Mira Hellmann, who serves patients in Hackensack, New Jersey.
A board-certified gynecologic oncologist, Dr. Hellmann is affiliated with Regional Cancer Care Associates, seeing patients at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center. The scope of her surgical expertise includes traditional open surgery, as well as minimally invasive surgery. She has extensive expertise in complex laparoscopic surgery as well as robotic surgery, and treats all subtypes of gynecologic cancers, including uterus, cervix, fallopian tube, ovaries, primary peritoneal, vaginal and vulvar cancer.

Educated in the United States, Dr. Hellmann graduated with her medical degree from the SUNY Health Science Center at Brooklyn, before completing her internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Finally, she returned to the SUNY Health Science Center, where she completed her fellowship in gynecologic oncology.
An expert in her field, the doctor is board-certified in gynecologic oncology and obstetrics & gynecology by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). The mission of the ABOG is to define specialty standards, certify obstetricians and gynecologists, and facilitate continuous learning to advance knowledge, practice, and professionalism in women’s health.
Continuously advancing her efforts, she is an active member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Her research interests include surgical innovations and clinical trials in gynecologic oncology.
In her professional experience, Dr. Hellmann’s career has been focused on outstanding clinical care, for which she has received Top Docs recognition. Since 2007, she held an academic position at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey, and in 2015, she transferred to Hackensack University, where she assumed a similar role. She has taught many residents and medical students, and has received many awards for excellence in teaching. She is currently leading the department in starting a brand new OB/GYN residency program
Gynecologic oncology is a specialized field of medicine that focuses on cancers of the female reproductive system, including ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. A gynecologic oncologist is a physician who specializes in diagnosing and treating cancers that are located on a woman’s reproductive organs.
Outside of work, Dr. Hellmann volunteers her services to her surrounding communities and shuls. She has been the point person for Rabbanim for gynecologic related halachic questions, and has been a speaker for Sharsheret, which is an organization that helps Jewish women with breast and ovarian cancer. She is fluent in both English and Hebrew.
