An established radiation oncologist, Dr. Vern-Gross is affiliated with Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. Her areas of clinical interest include pediatric, adolescent, and young adult cancers, breast cancer, bone and soft tissue tumors, proton therapy, quality of life/symptom management/palliative medicine, and communication/medical education.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from Northwestern University in 2000, Dr. Vern-Gross earned her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Des Moines University College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2005. She completed her residency in pediatrics at Hope Children’s Hospital in 2008, and completed her fellowship in palliative medicine at Boston Children’s / Dana Farber Cancer Institute in 2009.

After working for several years as a palliative care specialist, she completed a residency in radiation oncology at Wake Forest Baptist Health in 2012, where she served as Chief Resident. Finally, she completed a fellowship in pediatric proton radiotherapy at the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in 2014.

Distinguished as a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the doctor is board-certified in radiation oncology by the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology, which is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the use of imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

To boot, she is board-certified in pediatrics and hospice & palliative medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics, which is an organization that provides board certification to qualified Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of medical diseases in infants, children, and adolescents.

Continuously advancing her efforts, Dr. Vern-Gross is an active member of the NCCN Wilms' Tumor Guidelines Panel, the Opioid Response Team, the Radiation Oncology Residency Education Committee, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology, the Society for Palliative Radiation Oncology, the Children's Oncology Group, the Society for Palliative Radiation Oncology, the American College of Radiology, the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Osteopathic Association.

Radiation oncology is a medical specialty that involves the controlled use of radiation to treat cancer. It is one of the three primary specialties – the other two being surgical and medical oncology – involved in the treatment of cancer. A radiation oncologist is a specialist physician who uses ionizing radiation in the treatment of cancer.

Among her various accolades, Dr. Vern-Gross has been the recipient of the 2020 Endowment for Education Research Award (2019), COG Young Investigator (2019), Academy of Educational Excellence Award (2018), Education Science Career Development Award (2018), Above & Beyond Recognition Program Award (2017), and Service Excellence for Patient Care (2011).
