  • Lumbar injections

That's a great question. Pain developing 2 weeks after a procedure makes it hard to say the Injections were the cause. If your getting injection therapy in the "BACK: that's typically.for ESI and most likely a chronic condition already existed. Also I noticed the diabetes which steroid injections can cause havoc with blood sugar monitor that and discuss with pain management doc. OK basically you could have a worsening of the condition. I routinely caution patients that the injections will help them feel better bit your not healed. Therefore, no strenuous activity. No golf light duty at work etc. Another possibility is The anti inflammation properties of the shot wore off and the pain is back. In either case you need a follow up and re examination to compare you current exam findings with the new ones. READ MORE

  • What can be done for spine hernia?

Herniated discs are common spinal injuries. It's been said that if you took and MRI's of 100 peoples spine who did not have back pain you would find about 20% have disc injuries. So that tells us a few thinks. First not all disc injuries produce chronic pain. Second not all disc Injuries require surgery. In my clinic we successfully manage disc Injuries all the time. Most important is a complete evaluation with emphasis on neurological functions. If these basic functions are preserved conservative managment can be employed and include spinal adjustments, spinal decompression Traction, focused shock wave therapy, home stretching and nutraceuticals to decrease inflammation. These are very successful, about 80% of our patients who meet the initial criteria and are neurological stable do very well within 30 days. I suggest we mo it or them monthly for 3 to 6 months. If the patient remains symptom free for 6.months bareing another I jury they remain symptom free. READ MORE

  • Lower Back Pain urgent or not?

Obviously this answer is going to be a bit late and not very helpful but it's a great question you have regarding acute back injuries. Let's not forget that in situations like this there is a injury. You've done something physical and pain is the result. That means injury. But what has been Injured and to what extent is the question. This often depends on the nature of the injury. I bent over to pick up ky shoes and Yada Yada Yada. Or I was lifting a heavy object in an awkward position and Yada Yada Yada I have back pain. So the mechanism of injury is important and will often determine the potential for serious Injury but not always with disc's. I've had patients sneeze and blow out a disc. But you get the principle here. Mild pain without radiation from a no traumatic incident rest ice topical agents and OTC NASIDS may do the trick. However, when we have radiating pain , numbness in the extremities or muscle weakness these are signs of a potentially more significant problems. Medical evaluation is a good idea. If loss of bladder or bowel control that's an ER trip right away. READ MORE

  • Is herniated disc pain for life?

If properly treated from the beginning I would definately say no. Most patients do not suffer from chronic pain. Intermittent aggravations can occur but these are not always attributed to the disc either. READ MORE

  • Physical neck/head/shoulders

Based on the fact that you were diagnosed with concussion I'm sure you suffered a significant blow to the head but also trauma to the neck as well. That said TBI can cause headaches and so can the neck injury. Therefore what to do. 1. Find a competent doctor. 2. COMPLETE EXAM. The physician must perform a hands on orthopedic and neurological evaluation as well as cervical stress films at 72 inches. 3. If neurological findings warrant perform MRI of the neck. With this info in hand a care plan can be designed. Most likely the trauma also caused soft tissue damage to the neck muscle or ligaments and this includes the joint capsule. If this is the case this can cause chronic inflammation in the joints, spastic muscles and nerve root irritation and the subsequent neck pain headaches and limited movement. A competent physician should be able to figure this out for you without difficulty READ MORE

  • Can exercises make my disc hernia worse?

Disc herniations arise from damage to the annulus.  The annulus is a multi layer ring structure sort of like steel belts in your tires.   It holds the nucleus pulpusis or the gel like structure in the center of the disc in place.  The Spinal vertebra pivot on this nucleus.   Ok now we understand the anatomy we can answer the question.   Anything that increases the pressure in the disc can damage those rings and allow the nucleus to bulge or herniate.   This can put pressure on the nerve or cord and produce pain typically goi g down the leg.  So exercises that increases  pressures on the disc are not good especially during active treatments or the acute stage of care.  This is because they can cause further outward migration of the disc further aggravating the nerve.  So dead lifting, heavy squatting, leg press, jogging, plyometrics and the like are  are not recommended.  Yoga, walking, swimming, stretching are OK.   But as always if there is pain stop.  Try Spinal decompression coupled with shock wave therapy and adjustments.  I get GREAT RESULTS with these treatments.  Sent from my Galaxy READ MORE
