  • What can you give a toddler for nausea?

The only medication available is Zofran, also known as ondansetron.   Sometimes a PPI (such as Prilosec or Nexium) can work. However, you should consult your physician as what really needs to happen is to find out the reason for nausea. READ MORE

  • How can I know if my 4 month old is teething?

A 4-month old that is sucking on his/her hands may or may not be teething.  As part of their normal development, small infants find their hands and put them in their mouth because they are curious about what things taste and feel like and they enjoy if your infant is teething, then the gums will be swollen and very bumpy, not straight and flat. • Teen weight loss?

As a pediatrician that has been in practice for many years, I get this question and concern a lot. First of all, congratulations that you want to look and feel better about yourself. But you need to go about this in a healthy manner from both a physical and mental standpoint. I would start by speaking with a dietician to set a calorie goal for yourself based on your height, weight, and goals that provide adequate nutrition (vitamins, minerals, etc)  Next I would set a weight goal to attain, and after getting there trying to stay there. Third, I would talk to a trainer or someone who is trained to give good advice about how much exercise and what type of exercise to do in order to maintain a good, healthy weight.  And remember, there is a good weight for you to be at based on your own body type. Your plan moving forward will be unique to you, not to others. And others plans for diet and exercise may not be right for you. Lastly, please seek mental health counseling if you are feeling depressed, hopeless, or sad. As physicians, we need to ensure that not only do you have good physical health, but good mental health as well. READ MORE

  • Does my daughter have her first period?

Your daughter may indeed be having her first period; that would be very early for a 9-year-old. You should see your physician as soon as possible for an exam and tests to see if this bleeding is from her uterus or other source. There is no need for an emergency room visit. Dr. K READ MORE

  • My daughter has had a brown patch on her back?

This patch is difficult to see, but I am concerned it may be a sign of some type of disorder. Please see your doctor at your earliest convenience. This is not life threatening, but appears to be something that needs to be addressed sooner than later. Dr. K READ MORE

  • Why does my child's mouth hurt?

There are multiple causes of mouth pain. If he has fever, he should be seen asap for a possible throat infection caused by the germ streptococcus. If there is no fever, please see your doctor as soon as you have time to see why he has pain. Pain in the mouth can be from a throat infection, infected tooth, sores in the mouth, etc. Dr. K READ MORE

  • Height growth?

There is a way to predict your adult height. You need to use the Mid Parental Height calculation. Based on your mom and dad’s height, your predicted adult ht is 5 feet 4.5 inches, plus or minus 2 inches. You are on track to reach this predicted height. You will not reach 5 feet 10 inches unfortunately.    I wish you well. Dr. K READ MORE

  • What is the best gas relief for infants?

This answer is to the question of “What is the best gas relief for infants?” The honest answer is the following: There is no medication that relieves gas in infants. In spite of clever marketing, anecdotal reports and well meaning friends and family, there is no product ever invented that can get rid of a kid’s gas. Once gas is formed in the GI tract, either from swallowing air from normal swallowing, eating or drinking, or from the metabolism of the foods we eat, there are only two places gas can go, basically up or down! So, the best thing is to determine whether or not some food in the diet is causing gas, and to eliminate it. Relief from gas pain can be helped by burping, walking your infant, “bicycle” of the legs to improve elimination, warm compresses on the tummy, etc. Dr. K READ MORE

  • Will I grow more?

It is unlikely you will grow more if you have had your period for more than 2 years. Onset of menses signals maturation of the person into adult life. Once you have had menses for about 2 years, it is unlikely you will grow any more. There is a simple way to know definitely if you will grow and that is to perform an X-ray known as a bone age. In this X-ray, the hand is X-rayed and a radiologist compares your bones in the hand to a set of standard hand X-rays, and can determine if you are fully mature or not. Consider having this simple test done Dr. Karam READ MORE

  • What do I do about my daughters vaccinations?

The short answer is simple….Please, please get your daughter her immunizations to protect her from severe infectious diseases. The vaccines that your daughter may be due for are very safe, very effective and have been studied and used for many many years. Please talk with your primary care physician about which vaccines are needed. Then, along with your child’s physician write out a plan of action as to the schedule she needs to become fully vaccinated. As a pediatrician myself who has seen how severe these infections can be, I cannot urge you strongly enough to get these vaccinations asap. Dr. K READ MORE

  • What can you give a toddler for a cold?

Since a cold is caused by a virus, antibiotics are not needed and will do no good whatsoever. And since we have no medication to directly treat the cold, treating symptoms such as runny nose, congestion, etc., are all we can do. Unfortunately, oral medications are almost completely ineffective in treating the common cold. Oral decongestants, oral antihistamines and the like have been studied extensively and shown to have no benefit, and quite a few side effects. So your best bets are to keep your child well hydrated, encourage plenty of rest and sleep, use a saline nasal spray to clear mucous, and just wait it out. Some studies suggest that a small amount of Vicks Vapo Rub on the chest can help the congestion, and it is certainly safe. Dr. K READ MORE

  • Weight concerns?

In answer to your question “is there anything I can do to lose weight”, this is most difficult to answer, but I will try. There are two main ways to lose weight. First is to reduce the number of calories you consume each day. This includes calories from carbohydrates (sweet things with sugar, starches such as rice, potatoes and pasta) and calories from fats (such as animal products, fats from veggies such as avocado and nuts, etc.). Next and just as important is to exercise. Now exercise can come in many forms, such as walking, running or swimming. But it also includes taking stairs instead of an elevator, parking further away from a building so you walk more, etcLosing weight is a difficult thing to do. Please talk to your physician about this at your next well visit. And talk to your parents about helping you to make good food choices, and to start or continue an exercise daily that you enjoy. But you can do it!! Dr. K READ MORE

  • When can a preschooler return to school?

He has hand foot and mouth disease. The answer is that he may return to school when the blisters on the hands, feet, and mouth are clearly improving and resolving and he is fever free for 24 hours. If there is any doubt, keep him home an additional day.   Dr. K READ MORE

  • Is it ok to have breastfed after taking pepto bismol?

  • How long does it take for a child to get over bronchitis?

This is an answer to the question “how long does it take for a child to get over bronchitis.” The answer is not simple. First of all, I would question the diagnosis of “bronchitis.” This diagnosis is seldom made in pediatrics, so does your child have asthma? That would be my first answer. Second, most “bronchitis” is caused by viruses and children with a cough caused by a viral bronchitis will cough up to 2-3 weeks. Third, if symptoms are associated with fevers, then concerns are that the child may have pneumonia and your child may need a chest X-ray and/or antibiotics. Please follow up with your doctor for persistent cough beyond 3 weeks, or if the child has fever (defined as a temp above 100.4 degrees F, or 38 degrees C). • How can I increase my toddler's appetite?

You can’t, and nor would you try to do so. Your child will eat when hungry. Always place healthy food in front of your child and then leave them alone for 15 minutes or so. Kids will eat when hungry. When not hungry, they will not eat and should never be forced to do so. You decide what they eat. They decide how much and when. This is frustrating for parents, but is imperative that they adhere to these directions. If you force your kid to eat, they will develop poor habits and may have eating disorders later in life. • How do you feed a baby that refuses a bottle?

When a baby refuses a bottle, it is because 1. They are not hungry. If that is the case (in other words, they have eaten in the past 3-4 hours), then do not force the issue. When they are hungry, they will eat. 2. If this is a breast fed baby, and doesn’t want the bottle, but rather mom’s breast and breast milk. If that is the case, the infant will take the bottle, but will have to be several hours since the last feed and will be so hungry and thirsty that they will eat. 3. They are ill. Again, when the baby has enough time since the last feed, will get so hungry and thirsty that they will eat. So, the infant will eventually eat, you just have to be very patient. This all, of course, assumes this is an otherwise healthy infant. Infants with underlying medical conditions may be a different story, and you will need to consult with your doctor.   Dr. K READ MORE

  • Can a 2 month old go 8 hours without eating?

Can a 2-month-old go 8 hours without eating? That depends on many factors. If the child was a full-term baby with no underlying medical conditions and is aging weight well, then the answer is yes. Otherwise, you should consult your physician before allowing 8 hours between feeds. Dr. K READ MORE

  • What can cause dizziness in a child?

Contrary to what you may have heard or seen, dizzy spells in a child are rarely cause for concern of a serious nature. In the vast majority of cases, dizzy spells are simply from volume depletion, or not enough blood circulating to the brain, so the brain becomes “dizzy” and wants to rest. This is a hydration issue. The child simply needs to drink fluids and have a high salt diet for a few days. Water is the best fluid. Sports drinks are not very good in that many of them have too much sugar so the absorption is low; some sports drinks are better, but you will have to read labels. In rare cases, the dizzy spells can be due to cardiac or neurological problems. This is best sorted out by your physician. If the child is actually passing out, they need to be seen ASAP.   Hope this helps, Dr. K READ MORE

  • Can crying too long hurt a child?

Can a child cry too long? The answer is no. There are no recorded cases, nor have I ever heard of a child that became ill, needed to be in the hospital or other problems from crying too longThe really question is why? Why would a child cry for so long? In the absence of illness, most kids are having trouble with emotions and feelings, and the parent should explore ways to get to the reason for the crying Dr. K READ MORE
