The first thing to ask is what is her Body Mass Index, or BMI. If it is normal, then there is no reason to gain weight. The second thing to ask is why does she want to gain weight? For athletics perhaps? The reason needs to be a good one. Lastly, are there underlying physical or psychiatric issues involved that would prompt her to gain weight, ie celiac disease (that prevents absorption of calories), or depression or anxiety that might affect her body image. Her physician can help sort through these questions to see if indeed weight gain is a good idea or not for her. As far as gaining weight, it's simply a matter of ingestion calories, and of course health calories. Lean protein, complex carbohydrates, and the right kind of fats. Can a baby start teething at 2 months? The answer is yes, but this is very unusual. If your 2-month-old child is drooling and her hands are in her mouth, this may only indicate normal infant development. But if you see or feel a tooth, then it is teething! Unfortunately, the only effective treatment is antibiotics along with pain relief. If your child is above age 2 and fully immunized then you can wait a few days before starting antibiotics and see if resolves with time For children with multiple infections tubes inserted into the eardrum are your best bet. All children 6 months of age or older should receive a vaccination for influenza or the flu shot. Children under the age of 9 who have never received a flu shot should receive 2 of them, one month apart. There are several brands of flu vaccines made for small children. How can I reduce my baby's fever at home?
Your baby’s fever is the normal natural response to an infection. So if your baby is comfortable, eating, and sleeping well, then giving fever reducers is not necessary. The purpose of fever reducers is to make the child comfortable. It does not shorten the course of the illness or cure the child if you need to use a medication then Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or Acetaminophen (Tylenol, others) can effectively lower (but not cure) the fever. For an earache, the best treatment is to call or see your physician determine the reason for the earache. This will determine the best course of treatment for immediate relief oral Tylenol or Ibuprofen is your best bet. Can allergy medications cause any side effects for children?
Yes, they can. If your child is on an antihistamine such as Benadryl, then they may become drowsy or in unusual cases hyperactive. Zyrtec can cause nightmares and sleep disturbance in a small percentage of kids nasal sprays such as Flonase can cause nose bleeds. If you are speaking of a middle ear infection, which is the typical infection that a child gets, then the answer is yes. If we are speaking of “swimmers ear” then the answer is noMost infections of the middle ear will resolve on their own, however, if your child is under age 2 or has not completed his/her immunizations, then waiting for resolution on its own may result in very severe disease for the child, including pneumonia, bone, and joint infections and possible meningitis. This answer is in response to the question “how do I know if my child has bronchitis” Children rarely if ever get what is classically known as “bronchitis”, which is almost always an adult disorder. If your child has a cough, there can be many reasons, including the common cold, croup, asthma, post-viral cough syndrome, pneumonia, etc. More rare causes would be the aspiration of a foreign body, congenital malformations, etc. If your child’s cough has persisted for more than two weeks or is accompanied by fever or trouble breathing, then you need your doctor or NP asap to see your child and listen to the chest. Medications such as Tylenol or Advil are good for any pain, especially sore throats. Also one can use an over-the-counter product such as Cepacol or Choraseptic which come as lozenges. Please call your doctor and see if this illness warrants an office visit to make sure that your child does or does not have a Streptococcal sore throat, which can in rare cases be serious and requires antibiotics.
