Dr. Dr. Mark Landon's Expert Contributions
Are neck lift scars noticeable?
There are several published and widely practiced types of neck lift surgery. Some create more potentially visible scars than others. Scars tend to become less visible over time, and can be revised if problematic. READ MORE
How do you fix scars on your face from plastic surgery?
How scars are "fixed" on the face depends on the size, location, and configuration of those scars, and characteristics of the scar that contribute to visibility (color, texture, and topographical relationship to surrounding skin. Your complexion plays a role in decision making, along with your age, underlying health conditions, lifestyle, and professional demands. In summary, the clinical approach to scar management is like any other medical or surgical problem: treatment is in the context of history, examination, other important data, and patient preferences. Does facelift surgery last forever?
YES, you'll never look as old after facelift as you would have appeared if you did not have the facelift. However, your features continue aging over time so maintenance of the result adds tremendous value and prolongs your vitality and confidence. READ MORE
Can I shower after rhinoplasty?
For my own rhinoplasty patients, when a splint is applied to the nose after rhinoplasty, YES, I allow them to shower their body and perhaps their hair with the neck extended back so water doesn't soak the nose and splint. Your surgeon would likely NOT want you to shower your face. READ MORE
What shape of nose is most attractive?
There is no single size or shape of the nose that is most attractive on every face. Beauty is a combination of individual features and the relationship of parts to one another and to the whole. Ethnicity and skin type are determinants; A beautiful Northern European female face may look best with one type of nose, but that same nose on a Korean or Brazilian or Persian woman may not work. There are definitely elements of proportion and relationships that are commonly agreed to be beautiful that rhinoplasty surgeons plan to achieve, but the degree to which these elements are applied depends on your aesthetic sense and desired outcome. What are the risks of a neck lift?
Risks of neck lift include, but not limited to: Disappointing result, need for secondary procedure to improve result, asymmetry between right and left sides, residual skin wrinkles, recurrent neck bands, residual neck fullness, visible surface contour irregularities which may or may not be positional, nerve injury with lower lip palsy, bleeding, infection, seroma (fluid collection in neck), visible scarring, injury to deeper neck structures, skin color changes in areas of the neck, and other possible risks depending on your particular presenting anatomy, how you heal, and the surgical techniques incorporated in your necklift procedure. What helps with pain after rhinoplasty?
Analgesics are usually prescribed by the operating surgeon to manage pain that is expected after any surgical procedure. Inform your doctor that your pain is poorly controlled, and he/she/they will likely assist you. READ MORE
Is nose plastic surgery permanent?
When performed by qualified professionals in accredited facilities, YES, rhinoplasty (change in size and/or shape of the nose) is very safe, and YES, the results are permanent. READ MORE
How can I tighten my skin without surgery?
Daily or near daily (nightly) application of 0.1% tretinoin to facial skin stimulates dermal collagen synthesis and preserves youthful features. Radiofrequency, CO2 or erbium laser, chemical (croton oil or deep TCA) peels, plasma (Renuvion), and/or dermabrasion tighten facial skin also, but are mainly indicated for textural aging, fine superficial wrinkles and roughness of the skin. Injectable fillers also create an appearance of tighter skin by volumizing underlying soft tissue. The gold standard for treatment of gravitational contour aging remains surgery, and there are many minor surgical procedures besides facelift that can produce major improvements. READ MORE
Can I brush my teeth after rhinoplasty?
Yes, of course you should brush your teeth after rhinoplasty. Ask your rhinoplasty surgeon all such questions to be sure no precautions with regard to upper front teeth and lip. Be gentle to avoid stimulating cough, sneeze, or splint removal. READ MORE
Why does my nose still look bigger after rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a very individualized procedure because no two noses are exactly identical and people desire different changes and results for their nose. Ask your surgeon about your situation and observations. READ MORE
Will a breast implant pop on an airplane?
Wild and crazy MYTH !!! READ MORE
Can a scar be removed by plastic surgery?
YES, your existing scar can be removed, but will be replaced by a new scar that hopefully can be revised for less visibility. The procedure is called "scar revision," rather than scar removal. READ MORE
Can a rhinoplasty hurt years later?
If pain in the area of your rhinoplasty persists, consultation is recommended, perhaps with your rhinoplasty surgeon first. There are many nerves in the area of your nose, and one or more may have been injured, pulled, kinked, cut, compressed, or otherwise changed by the procedure such that the nerve is sending pain signals causing headache or discomfort. If the offending nerve can be localized, resolution is possible. A trial of local anesthesia or neuromodulator at the source of pain may help confirm, and ablation, neuroma removal, or other treatment may offer permanent relief. Steve Laverson MD READ MORE
How long does nose plastic surgery last?
The results of rhinoplasty are PERMANENT. However, if there are issues after rhinoplasty you wish addressed, they can always be changed. Nasal shape and proportion changes little with age. READ MORE
How much time do I need off work for a rhinoplasty?
This question should be addressed to your surgeon. The duration of recovery and return to work depends on the type of rhinoplasty you're having, the type of work you do, and other elements. READ MORE
What happens if you remove your breast implants?
Excellent question, but the answer depends on many variables, such as how large the implants are relative to your native breast tissue, your skin elasticity, your age, how wide your chest is, the position of breasts on your chest, and others. See a board certified plastic surgeon in your area for more specific answers and to understand what to expect. READ MORE
Does ear pinning surgery hurt?
Like other surgical procedures, anesthesia will prevent all sensation of pain during ear pinning. After the procedure, your doctor will prescribe analgesics to use as needed for pain control. As healing progresses, pain generally resolves completely, usually within weeks. Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen and tylenol may be enough to control your pain after ear pinning. Does a rhinoplasty change your smile?
Excellent question. Although rhinoplasty only changes the nose anatomically, visual relationships with surrounding structures may also change as a result. If work at the nasal spine (base of the nose near top of upper lip) is performed, then YES, your smile may change temporarily or permanently. Often, a strong suture between nose and central part of upper lip is used to prevent upper lip from dropping after rhinoplasty, and to prevent smile from changing. READ MORE
Can you make your jawline more defined?
YES, there are several ways to sharpen jawline definition. The most common and straightforward permanent solutions for young women are liposuction below (and possibly above) jawline and a carefully chosen extended anatomic chin implant placed along the jawline. READ MORE

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Steve Laverson serves patients in San Diego, California.
A respected plastic surgeon for over 25 years with unsurpassed credentials, Dr. Laverson’s passion is for natural beauty, no appearance or indication of cosmetic surgery. He has operated Feel Beautiful Aesthetic Clinic in San Diego, California since 1993.
Deeply caring for each of his patients, Dr. Laverson utilizes an artistic sense and masterful surgical skill to achieve desired aesthetic goals. Specializing in aesthetic improvement of the face, body, breast, and skin, he is well-known both locally and internationally for his work with rhinoplasty, revision rhinoplasty, face lift, neck lift, eyes, anti-aging, lip augmentation and lip enhancement, breast augmentation, breast lift, tummy tuck, labiaplasty, and body contouring.
To help women and men enjoy their most confident life, he offers comprehensive aesthetic evaluation and treatment, both surgical and nonsurgical. His broad knowledge and superior technical skills support his ability to convert vision into reality, and his mature operative judgment is the product of vast procedural experience. Combined with these assets, his peerless ethical standards and deep compassion make Dr. Laverson a professional one can trust with their most valuable possessions – face and body.
Known as an artist even before high school, he attended the United States Naval Academy on a Congressional Appointment from 1975-77, and graduated first in his class at the University of Maryland in 1979. At the University of Maryland School of Medicine, he decided that plastic surgery was the best fit for his artistic ability and for his love of beauty.
Not one to abide short cuts, after medical school Dr. Laverson trained in general surgery and plastic surgery as an intern, resident, and fellow for ten years. He learned and operated at many esteemed institutions with great surgeons at University of Maryland, Johns Hopkins, University of Pennsylvania, Emory, UCLA, USC, Stanford, and other respected centers. He attributes his strong surgical confidence and technical skill to lessons absorbed during those years, in particular, his chief residency in general surgery at Martin Luther King Jr. General Hospital in South Central Los Angeles. This experience was a crucible for the development of broad applied anatomical and physiologic knowledge, mature surgical judgment, technical excellence, and a sound foundation for a lifetime of intangible professional confidence and expertise that is not widely available.
Participating in the American Board of Plastic Surgery Maintenance of Certification Program annually, Dr. Laverson is board-certified through the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS). The mission of the ABPS is to promote safe, ethical, efficacious plastic surgery to the public by maintaining high standards for the education, examination, certification, and continuous certification of plastic surgeons as specialists and subspecialists.
Furthermore, he is board-certified through the American Board of Surgery (ABS). The ABS serves the public and the specialty of surgery by providing leadership in surgical education and practice, by promoting excellence through rigorous evaluation and examination, and by promoting the highest standards for professionalism, lifelong learning, and the continuous certification of surgeons in practice.
Combining natural artistic sensibility, broad scientific knowledge, perfectionistic standards, and unsurpassed technical skill, Dr. Laverson has held a variety of clinical and administrative positions at local hospitals. He has also contributed to peer-reviewed journals such as Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Aesthetic Surgery Journal, New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Journal of Trauma, and others.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), he is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons.
With a commitment to service, Dr. Laverson is the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Femininity Foundation. It is a federally designated 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization providing aesthetic and reconstructive plastic surgery services to promote rehabilitation and recovery for unfunded adult victims of violence and physical abuse.
Plastic surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. It can be divided into two main categories – reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery. A plastic surgeon’s primary responsibility is performing surgical and non-surgical procedures, and they use a variety of reparative and reconstructive techniques to get the job done.
Locally and internationally well-known for his work with rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty, Dr. Laverson’s research interests include aesthetic improvements of face, breasts, and body. He attributes his success to natural inherited abilities, traditional relentless work ethic, observation and education from others, a strong devotion to service, and the promotion of interests and well-being of others.
