Get to know Neonatologist & Clinical Informaticist Dr. Jaimin M. Patel, who serves the population of Mississippi.
Dr. Patel completed his undergraduate degree with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from India in 2001. Furthering his education graduated with his Medical Degree from his alma mater in 2004, giving him over a decade of experience in his field. After relocating to the United States he graduated with his Master of Science in Medical Informatics in 2010 from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. He completed his pediatrics residency from the Mt Sinai School of Medicine – St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital. Wanting to further his training he then completed his Neonatology fellowship from the University of Chicago.
Dr. Patel is tri-certified in pediatrics and Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics, and in Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. Dr. Patel currently practices as an associate professor of Pediatrics-Neonatologist and an assistant chief medical information officer at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. His primary research interests include informatics-related research in alerts, quality improvement of electronic prescriptions, clinical research in neonatology etc. In addition, he has been involved in several quality improvement projects in NICU including golden hour QI project, surfactant administration timing improvement project, anesthesia NICU performance improvement project. As an assistant chief medical information officer and clinical informaticist, he also participates in EMR optimization, Epic Physician Optimization committee which makes institute-wide EMR related decisions, alert optimization committee, NICU orderset development etc. His work on Optimization of order entry has lead to reduction in errors in electronic prescriptions. As a neonatologist, Dr. Patel provides compassionate clinical care to the sickest premature and term neonates and infants at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Neonatology is a subspecialty of pediatrics that consists of the medical care of newborn infants, especially the ill or premature newborn. It is a hospital-based specialty and is usually practiced in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). The principal patients of neonatologists are newborn infants who are ill or require special medical care due to prematurity, low birth weight, intrauterine growth restriction, congenital malformations (birth defects), sepsis, pulmonary hypoplasia or birth asphyxia.
